Sprained a muscle? If you’d rather take arnica than ibuprofen you’re not alone. More than nine million Brits use natural remedies for common health concerns, while as many as 40 per cent of cancer patients use complementary medicine to manage their symptoms, according to Cancer Research UK.

People turn to natural remedies for all kinds of reasons. Maybe you prefer not to put harsh chemicals in your body or perhaps you want to avoid the side-effects linked with conventional medicine. For some, it’s simply a last resort.

‘Many of my patients chose natural medicine out of desperation as they weren’t getting better on conventional medicine,’ explains acupuncturist and homeopath Jackie Chester. ‘One woman I treated had been on valium for 12 years but still wasn’t coping. After 18 months of treatment she fully recovered, no longer needed medication and became a counsellor at the local prison.’
