Adina sat in her garden and gazed at the plump robin who was perched on her bird table. He stared back at her reproachfully.

‘You ate all the peanuts,’ she murmured to him. ‘I promise I’ll get some more today.’

The dog started barking next door and the robin fluttered away, leaving Adina alone with her thoughts.

She’d reached a crossroads in her life. Or had she? Maybe it was more that she was feeling a little lost. She really didn’t know what life had in store for her next. Though her best friend Susie seemed to think she didn’t have to worry about that.

‘She’s wonderful!’ she had gushed over a glass of red wine the other night in Adina’s flat. ‘She told Mel at work last year that she would be holding a baby boy in her arms soon and that she needed to be careful around men with red hair.’

Adina tried to contain her mirth. ‘Seriously? Men with red hair?’

Susie chuckled lightly. ‘I know it sounds strange but Mel did end up holding a baby and divorcing her husband.’

‘And her husband…?’

She wasn’t sure of her purpose in life any more

‘Has kind of ginger-coloured hair,’ Susie finished for her. And don t tell me, she gave birth to a baby boy!’ Susie made a face. ‘No, she’s 56!’ ‘Oh!’ Adina laughed. ‘So, a grandchild, then?’

Susie shook her head and beamed.
