Rain Harvest Home

The owners of this off-grid retreat in the mountains (volcanic stone) foundations and green roofs. The team decided to “invest in the higher up-front cost of timber construction with the idea of lowering our carbon footprint significantly over time,” says architect Robert Hutchison. A solar PV array powers the buildings, while a groundwater treatment and storage system supplies all of the home’s water year-round and irrigates the on-site orchard. Ultimately, it’s the landscape between the structures that ties them together, Hutchison says: “When the doors are open, the idea is that you are completely outside.”
