Charles Beddingfield suspects engine oil contamination– but finds none

The introduction in the 1980s of modern detergent engine oils prompted a spate of cars expiring in terminal seizure on the motorways. Apparently the new oils worked so well they washed all the gooey muck left behind by the old oils down into the engine’s sump where it clogged the oil pickup strainer and starved the lubrication system.
