The first part of the book, riffing on the traditional nursery rhyme about the old lady who swallows a fly, is so dull it lulls you into stop paying attention so it can pull off an almost-clever twist ending. Having finished the book, I then remembered it did the same thing to me twenty years ago when I first and last read it.Note to self: read again in twenty years to be surprised again.Side note: I'm am stunned to see that this is part of a series of twenty-three (23 !!?!?!?!!) books at this point.

I enjoyed this book for two reasons. First, I love that it is a new rendition of the old classic, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. The fact that I am familiar with the original book caused me to instantly recognize and want to read this different edition. I believe that this familiarity makes the book fun and interesting. In addition, I appreciate the repetition throughout the story. As the cold woman swallowed more and more snowman parts, the lines repeat themselves and end with, “I don't know why she swallowed some snow. Perhaps you know.” This repetition adds unity and cohesiveness to the book. It also possibly simplifies the text for emergent readers and makes reading easier. The big idea of this story was to show the assembly of a snowman in a silly way!

There was a cold lady who swallowed some snow by Lucille ColanderLove this kids book especially for those who do not get a lot of snow. It starts out with a woman who swallows some snow and then other items.I only listened to the story, I had no pictures in front of me. Sounds like a great story and questions you can ask the child before things happen on next pages asking what the child knows by looking at the picture.Love the elements, snow, pipe, coal, hat and a stick and a scarf. Love all the rhyming words as well, makes this a silly story for any child. You do find out at the end why she did what she did....I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Lucille Colandro has developed quite a hit with her "Lady" rhyming books. She has written one for just about every holiday/season imaginable. She has the old lady swallowing bats, bells, shells, and in this latest tale, snow. Along with the snow, the lady also swallows a pipe, coal, a hat, etc and the children will fun guessing what's going to happen to her in the end. Couple this with your favorite snowman story for a fun winter storytime.
