About this audiobook
They’re trying to take me. Help! Help me, please.
Daphne Mayfield sought a moment of quiet in a park—a break from city life, a tense relationship, and chronic overwork—but then an elderly woman makes a desperate plea. Daphne is reluctant to get involved when she’s not sure what’s happening, but she wants to help the stranger. Is the rambling old lady the victim of a crime or a victim of dementia?
As her unease grows, Daphne can’t let go of the encounter. No matter what her boyfriend or her friends say. No matter what the retired homicide detective warns. Though she knows she’s meddling in other people’s lives, her instincts scream that the danger is real.
With each increasingly bold intervention, Daphne involves herself in someone else’s crisis until she’s in too deep to turn back. She’s not just fighting for a stranger’s life…she’s fighting for her own.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was a thoughtful, rather uncomfortable book, yet compelling at the same time. It combines a modern day fraud/murder racket with the needs of a woman to understand how her past has affected her life choices and her need to change and grow. She is no longer content to drift but finds herself faced with the need to take action on 2 fronts, delving into her sister's long ago murder and her father's suicide and deciding if a stranger really needs help.Daphne witnesses something odd and possibly wrong in the park. An elderly woman begs for her help. Others claiming to be family take her away. Should she get involved? She tells friends , reports to police and is discouraged from further action. She remembers no one came forward when her sister was killed. She has a name and address, what could it hurt to check, to be sure. What follows are foot chases, car chases, arrest and jail and relationship issues. She seems obcessed but eventually finds believers. The back story is clearly told, the characters well portrayed and issues are resolved. Really liked the character Daphne evolved into. Dark and moody in places with lots of soul searching but a very good read. This book was sent to me in exchange for a review. Thank you to the author, publishers, Thomas & Mercer and Netgalley.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Daphne Mayfield has some serious baggage. She's had a tragic childhood and it's led to her having some emotional issues as an adult. Wishing that someone had seen something important in a crime that happened years ago, she vows to make sure to speak up if she ever sees anything wrong. So when she sees an elderly woman, scared and hiding, she decides to take a stand and make sure this woman is safe. But can she convince everyone that her concern for this little old lady is legitimate? Unfortunately, I found Daphne to be very moody and hard to relate to. She is clearly depressed and not a happy person. Understandably, she has emotional issues, but it gets a little old and she seems whiny. Overlooking Daphne's personality problems though, there is a good mystery and some great chase scenes that will take your breath away. And the ending is set up for a sequel, so I'm sure the next book will be coming soon. Overall I would have loved to give it 3.5 stars, but I'll give it 4 because I found the writing was good.
