About this audiobook

A New York Times bestseller!

“A bewitching gem...I absolutely loved every moment of this story.” —Stephanie Garber, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Caraval series
“If you loved the Hogwarts Library…you’ll be right at home at Summershall.” —Katherine Arden, New York Times bestselling author of The Bear and the Nightingale

From the New York Times bestselling author of An Enchantment of Ravens comes an “enthralling adventure” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) about an apprentice at a magical library who must battle a powerful sorcerer to save her kingdom.

All sorcerers are evil. Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything. Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery—magical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains. If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather.

Then an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire, and Elisabeth is implicated in the crime. With no one to turn to but her sworn enemy, the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn, and his mysterious demonic servant, she finds herself entangled in a centuries-old conspiracy. Not only could the Great Libraries go up in flames, but the world along with them.

As her alliance with Nathaniel grows stronger, Elisabeth starts to question everything she’s been taught—about sorcerers, about the libraries she loves, even about herself. For Elisabeth has a power she has never guessed, and a future she could never have imagined.

“..there is always more than one way to see the world. Those who claim otherwise would have you dwell forever in the dark.”

This book hooked me. The cover and title was enough to draw me in, but after listening to the first chapter I was gripped.

Who doesn’t want to grow up in a library surrounded by books with feelings?!

There was a bit of mystery surrounding Elisabeth that I loved.
The should be villain wasn’t the villain at all, and the charming hero type was… an arse! ? That’s putting it mildly.

It made me laugh out loud and ugly cry, A LOT! I’m pretty sure my heart was ripped out and crushed multiple times.. ???‍♀‍ I got attached to the characters really quickly so I felt their pain… so much pain.

It ended really well but I still want more. I’ll definitely reread this book a heap of times. I loved it. The world building was fantastic and the mains.. I’m going to talk about them for a moment.

Elisabeth is the kind of character I love reading about.
She grew up respecting the way her elders taught her, and she didn’t mind breaking a lot of rules. ?
When everything she was raised to believe in was brought into question, despite wanting to stay true to her beliefs she went into the world with an open mind and an open heart.
She wasn’t always strong, she wasn’t always right, and she owned her mistakes.

Nathaniel Thorn, where does one even begin? I loved him outright from the very beginning. He’s protective but not in an overbearing kind of a way, it was charming. He’s got a lot of qualities I adore, especially his wit and sarcasm. I could quite honestly gush about him all night.
I have to confess, his smile melted my heart every single time!

Silas… The soft spoken gentleman, with a twist. Ha. I can’t think of how else to describe him. I loved everything about him, especially his honesty.

Katrien is the kind of best friend that everyone should have!

The audio was enjoyable. The whispers from the grimoires really wigged me out at times, especially at the beginning. ?
Emily made each voice really distinctive.
My only issue was the editing.. (I guess)
At points it sounded like she went really close to the microphone, it would happen in the middle of a sentence for no reason at all. It really pulled my focus.

But yeah.. I can’t praise this enough. I absolutely loved it.
