About this audiobook
Alfie Bell is . . . fine. He's got a six-figure salary, a penthouse in Canary Wharf, the car he swore he'd buy when he was eighteen, and a bunch of fancy London friends.
It's rough, though, going back to South Shields now that they all know he's a fully paid-up pansy. It's the last place he's expecting to pull. But Fen's gorgeous, with his pink-tipped hair and hipster glasses, full of the sort of courage Alfie's never had. It should be a one-night thing, but Alfie hasn't met anyone like Fen before.
Except he has. At school, when Alfie was everything he was supposed to be, and Fen was the stubborn little gay boy who wouldn't keep his head down. And now it's a proper mess: Fen might have slept with Alfie, but he'll probably never forgive him, and Fen's got all this other stuff going on anyway, with his mam and her flower shop and the life he left down south.
Alfie just wants to make it right. But how can he, when all they've got in common is the nowhere town they both ran away from.
Contains mature themes.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I really loved this book!! The trope of the former outcast ending up with their childhood bully could, on paper, be quite icky, if not straight up offensive, but in this story it's done so tastefully, it's allowed to progress naturally and shows the ups and downs (so many downs) of what a relationship like this looks like. Both characters are compelling and relatable, and their motives are justified, even when it creates conflict. Their budding romance moved me, endeared me, engrossed me start to finish. With a lot of very hot moments as well as soft, emotional ones.
The audiobook is a gem by the way, this one made me fall head over heels in love with the voice of Cornell Collins and led me to listen to quite a lot of books just for the fact that he was the narrator.4 people found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I loved this story because it was so close to what I believe love and romance should be. And it didn't end at the first happily coming together. It was complicated and messy and real. The people and relationships didn't fit into stereotypes or boxes.. It was beautiful!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I loved the characters development and the narrator made an amazing job! I loved Alfie's accent!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Funny and light hearted, a feel good book. Can't help but make you smile.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The narrator did a really fantastic job with this - this is one of those books that just does really well as an audiobook because the accents just make it so much better ✨
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Great performance by Cornell Collins, who deftly narrates everything from banter to steamy scenes. A somewhat implausible enemies to lovers story, but I really liked all the characters, and there are a lot of delightfully humorous scenes.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It's sweet, but much too long for it's own good
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Love all the Spires series, this has great characters and as always amazing writing from Alexis Hall. Took me longer to get invested in this than it did all the other books in the series, still an enjoyable read. Alfie was raised by a family who basically made his insecure about his sexuality so in turn he became the town bully. Finn was one of those he bullied bust secretly had a bit of a crush on Alfie. They meets years later in that same town and after meeting in a bar and hooking up that night. Both realize they may be more to each other even though they are fighting their own demon's as well. We get a lovely HEA but it's a steamy rocky journey.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Boyfriend Material is one of my favorite books so I can’t believe I’m really saying this, but this book might actually be better. If not better, at least as good. Just listen to this book because it’s perfect!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5There were several times through this book that I couldn't figure out how I felt about it. I mean, it's so so good, of course, but so much of it was painful that I can't quite say it hit me the right way right now. Some other day? Maybe. Or maybe this one isn't it for me. The prologue is stunning. Fen's letters are stunning. I loved Greg and Kitty, but I found a couple of conflicts unconvincing, partially because these characters know so much of love. It was well-written. Complicated and not. And so are my feelings on it overall.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Like all of Alexis Hall's books, this was fun and engaging. I will always pick up books by this author! :D This one was a little heartbreaking and very quirky. Enjoyed it.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5So, at this point I basically feel like Alexis Hall can do no wrong. His books are always well written, entertaining, sexy, and peopled by fascinating characters it's fun to get to know. Pansies is no exception. What I think of as the "markers" of Hall's contemporary romances are all here: characters from a specific place that deeply informs who they are; attention to detail, especially details about things the characters do (their work, etc) which illustrate who the characters are; at least one "weighty" issue handled brilliantly; excellent side characters; a fight that you see coming but don't really see how the characters could avoid; a deep dive into character dynamics; and a happy ending. This time the story follows two men who hated each other as children (one bullied the other) but who fall for each other when circumstances draw them both back to their home town. Recommended.
