About this audiobook
From the highly acclaimed author of The Photographer of the Lost, a BBC Radio 2 Book Club Pick, comes a tale of a young war widow and one life-changing, sun-drenched visit to Cornwall in the summer of 1923...
Esme Nicholls is to spend the summer in Cornwall. Her late husband Alec, who died fighting in the war, grew up in Penzance, and she’s hoping to learn more about the man she loved and lost.
While there, she will stay with Gilbert, in his rambling seaside house, where he lives with his former brothers in arms. Esme is fascinated by this community of eccentric artists and former soldiers, and as she gets to know the men and their stories, she begins to feel this summer might be exactly what she needs.
But everything is not as idyllic as it seems – a mysterious new arrival later in the summer will turn Esme’s world upside down, and make her question everything she thought she knew about her life, and the people in it.
Full of light, laughter and larger-than-life characters, The Visitors is a novel of one woman finally finding her voice and choosing her own path forwards.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The story was okay, but I was distracted by all of the mental questioning. If I had taken a drink every time Esme asked herself a question I would have passed out by the second chapter. The reader was engaging enough. Overall, I wouldn't be interested in a sequel if the author maintained the same style.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Discovering the emotional growth behind the characters and their secrets.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I love this story… It captured my heart and my mind’s journey back to Cornwall which is a special place to me personally. The story has some unexpected turns which only added to some of the mystery of each of the characters, who were all traversing changes from grief in their own way. It is a VERY WELL and beautifully written novel capturing unique facets of human spirit and resilience. The Narrator was excellent. Loved it!
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This is a very disappointing book. The narrator is really boring. She doesn't have enough voices to distinguish between characters.
The story is slow and full of elaborate descriptions of anything and everything.
When the 'dead' husband reappeared I thought that at last something interesting might happen but to my disappointment it did not.
Really a waste of my time. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What an interesting book. Things didn’t go the way I thought they would at all. Well worth the read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Gentle relaxing romance that keeps us guessing.
Pleasant and surprising.
