An intimate and uplifting memoir by Richard E. Grant.
Born in Swaziland in 1957, Richard E. Grant moved to the UK to pursue his acting career, and has been a fixture on our screens since his breakout role in Withnail and I in 1987. When his beloved wife Joan died in 2021 after almost forty years together, she set him a challenge: to find a pocketful of happiness in every day.
The result is this book.
Set between the present day and flashbacks to delightfully indiscreet diary entries recalling landmarks from his remarkable life and glittering career, this is an immensely personal and profound memoir that celebrates and cherishes life’s unexpected joys.
Funny, moving and perceptive, A Pocketful of Happiness is an insight into the life of a much loved British actor.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It is stupendously heartfelt and gives me tremendous hope in the love that humans can have for one another. Thank you Richard for sharing this. May you be comforted by the fact that you found such great love in your life. To me, it seemed to raise you up and carry you along to all the wonderful experiences you had. You have the most superb accent and beautiful voice. Thank you again.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I’ve always loved Richard E Grant. This book had me in tears all the way through, with some belly laughs too. Such a wonderful account of a beautiful love story, the earthly part cruelly cut short by cancer. The book relies on diary entries, letters and airgrams from their 38 year relationship and he lays everything out in this moving tribute to Joan and their daughter.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Heartbreakingly beautiful, this is a voyage, It is honest, funny and sad, and just exquisite.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The most beautiful love story I have ever heard, of people who know how to live and love joyfully well. The author talks of his marriage and loss with love, humour and intelligent sensitivity and depth....all the qualities of an open heart and a gifted, award winning actor. This is how a life should be lived and remembered!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This brilliant biography benefitting the reader with so many life lessons, amusing stories, is incredibly well-written in its mastery of the English language. Hopefully Richard Grant will write more and more to bless us with his deep understanding of life.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Richard E Grant is a terrific writer, and this book is a selection of his diary entries from 1986 to 2021 which tell the story of his wonderful marriage to Joan Washington. Joan died of lung cancer in 2021 so there are definitely some heartbreaking moments, with Grant struggling to control his emotions as he reads, but ultimately this is a story of true love and deep devotion, “in sickness and in health”.
It was fun to hear about happy times, such as when Grant became a social media phenomenon during awards season when he was Oscar-nominated, and there are anecdotes about the many famous actors who knew Joan through her work as a world-renowned dialect coach.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys showbiz memoirs, and I also think it would be a great comfort to anyone who unexpectedly finds themselves in the role of carer. Grant details all the steps of cancer diagnosis, treatment, palliative care and funeral arrangements, and discusses his exhaustion and grief with charming honesty. While it is common for people to avoid the subject of death, it is surely better to talk openly about this inevitable event that affects us all. I am grateful for the experience of listening to this book and for the lessons it has taught me. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Well written and read, by the author. Loved Withnail and I, and it's interesting to hear how he got on after that. Friends with Charles and Camilla, for which it lost a star ?.
