D., was born in 1953, and is now an Associate Professor at the University of Latvia in its Department of History and Philosophy. His principal scholarly interests are concerned with the history of the Orthodox Church and its cultural heritage. More specifically, most of his 150+ publications deal with the Orthodox Church in Latvia and its environs. This includes the story of the Old Believers, church architecture, and how the Church heritage may be protected against its adversaries. His five monographs include the Notes on the Riga Eparchy in the 19th Century (Riga: Philokalia, 1999); Liutsin (Ludze) Deanery of the Polotsk-Vitebsk Eparchy in the Second Half of the 19th Century and Beginning of the 20th (Riga: Philokalia, 2004); Under the Protection of the Tikhvin icon: Archpastoral Voyage of John (Garklavs) (St. Petersburg: Alaborg 2013); Liutsin (Ludze) Deanery from the mid-l9th Century to the End of the 1930s (Riga: Philokalia, 2013); Latvian Orhodox Priests on the American Continent (Moscow: Society of Church Historians, 2013). He is the editor and coordinator of nine issues of a collection of articles entitled Orthodoxy in Latvia. Historical Notes. He also edited two issues of articles entitled Problems of Protecting the Cultural Heritage of Latvia. He is the chief editor of a periodical entitled Orthodoxy in Balticum, and edited the publication of a collection of articles entitled Latvian Old Believers: Problems of Retaining Their Historical Identity.view less
