After achieving a first-class degree in Modern History at Oxford, he worked as a journalist and editor, and then as a senior leader in charities. He has edited a number of magazines and relaunched the magazine of the British Legion, as well as contributing articles tp the Guardian and The Sunday Times, among others. He visits journalism schools throughout the country and speaks as a guest lecturer. He is a keen history researcher, and has done ground-breaking research into the involvement of English and Scottish leaders in the Thirty Years War, the lost mediaeval city of Semifonte and the history of the area of London he has lived in for the past 24 years, Queen’s Park. His research into the history of 31 soldiers from Queen’s Park who died in WW1 and are commemorated on a plaque in the parish church.view less
