About this ebook
From the acclaimed author of Warriors of God comes a riveting account of the pivotal events of 1492, when towering political ambitions, horrific religious excesses, and a drive toward international conquest changed the world forever.James Reston, Jr., brings to life the epic story of Spain’s effort to consolidate its own burgeoning power by throwing off the yoke of the Vatican. By waging war on the remaining Moors in Granada and unleashing the Inquisitor Torquemada on Spain’s Jewish and converso population, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella attained enough power and wealth to fund Columbus’ expedition to America and to chart a Spanish destiny separate from that of Italy. With rich characterizations of the central players, this engrossing narrative captures all the political and religious ferment of this crucial moment on the eve of the discovery of the New World.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Good historical account.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A very readable history of the Spanish Conquest of Moorish Spain and the Americas, and the resulting power and influence of Catholic Spain over Rome and the rest of Europe. I great place to start if you want to learn about this time period in Spain's history.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Fascinating history of 15th century Spain and Portugal with a specific focus on the Spanish Inquisition. Especially interesting for showing how tightly interwoven the Inquistion was with European exploration and religion. Basically, the Spanish King and Queen financed their explorations by confiscating property from those trapped in the web of the Inquisition--many of whom were Jewish. At the same time, exploration was sold in part on the theory that it would open up new souls to be saved. Also, interesting for reminding us that while talk of an Islamic Caliphate seems crazy today, talk of a Christian Crusade was no less crazy in the 1400s.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Reston is a great author who brings history alive. I cannot commend this work enough! For those who are interested in how events are interconnected, this is a book to read - Reston does a marvelous job of connecting the dots between the Spanish Inquisition, Columbus, and the fall of Moorish Spain.
