About this ebook

International intrigue and adventure combine in Running Dark, by Jamie Freveletti, the pulse-pounding sequel to Running from the Devil. Bestselling author Lee Child hailed Freveletti’s debut novel as, “Just terrific—full of thrills and tradecraft, pace and peril.” Now she brings back marathon runner and scientist Emma Caldwell in a gripping tale that combines terrorism, Somali pirates, and a possible chemical catastrophe as it races at breakneck speed into the most dangerous places in the world.

I started this book years ago but was not feeling it. I put it down and forgot about it. Yet, every once in a while when I got to pick up a book from my TBR pile; this book kind of haunts me. I finally decided to give this book a second chance. When I first started reading this book, it was like a different experience. I was into the story. The characters not right away but I was starting to warm up to them. Emma seemed interesting. However, my excitement faded fast again after about a third of the way in. There was a point where it was just a lot of talking and not much else. Maybe if I had read Running from the Devil I might have stuck with this book longer but than again maybe not. The second time around was not better and it seems that I might never finish this book.

"Running Dark"Synopsis:"From internationally bestselling author Jamie Freveletti comes a riveting new thriller featuring brilliant biochemist Emma Caldridge, except this time there's nowhere to run. . . . Emma Caldridge is on mile thirty-six of the fifty-five-mile Comrades ultramarathon in South Africa when a roadside car bomb explodes. Dazed and disoriented, she regains consciousness after the blast to find a man standing over her with a white plastic injector. She feels the prick of a needle and the rush of medication under her skin, but before she can make a sound, the man is gone. Shaken by the event and unsure of what substance was pumped into her, Emma calls the one person who can help her figure things out: Edward Banner of the security company Darkview. But Banner has his hands full with another emergency: Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden have attacked a cruise ship, and Darkview has been hired to assist with the rescue."My take,The book starts off with a "bang" with the roadside bomb that throws Emma Caldridge to the ground and she is approached and stuck with an object that looks like an epi-pen. She is able to get herself to her feet and is compelled to finish the race at breakneck speeds considering the injuries she sustained in the blast. She is very concerned with what might have been injected into her at the bombing site and proceeds to do testing to diagnose the substance. While this is going on Cameron Sumner (a coworker) is on a cruise ship in the Gulf of Aden and pirates proceed to overtake the ship and Cameron is forced to expose his identity to help protect the cruise ship and its occupants from the pirates. Edward Banner is the head of Darkview which is a security company that was hired to protect areas of the Gulf of Aden and convinces Emma Caldridge to sneak onto the cruise ship and help Cameron Sumner. Emma's main objective is to determine what the cargo is and how dangerous it may be to the world.I won this book in the Librarything.com Early Reviewers Giveaway. This is the first book by Jamie Freveletti that I've read. I had heard great things about her first book "Running with the Devil" but did not have the opportunity to read it. As I read "Running Dark" there were some areas that probably would have been better understood had I read her first book. There were also times while reading Running Dark that things seem to be cut short or left hanging or unfinished. I hope that some day I will have the opportunity to read her first book and then read Running Dark and maybe things will come to light.

Running dark is when a cruise ship moves in the open ocean with no lights and off the radar. The german cruise ship is doing just that as Somali pirates attempt to board and take not only the ship and it's guests captive, but also the hidden shipment of drugs on board it. Darkview Security has one operative onboard, another on her way as well as problems on the homefront with politicians attacking their past activities with the goal of ultimately destroying Darkview. Fast moving action with insights into Somalia and it's issues with pirates. Emma Caldridge is back and in the thick of it!

First, THANK YOU to William Morrow (Publisher) for sending me this book for free! I read and reviewed the first in the series when I recieved a free copy from LibraryThing Early Reviewers.Second in her Emma Caldridge series and a wonderful read. Non-stop action, many players involved. Still don't know who the 'Vulture' is, so I hope that leaves things open enough for another in the series!

Running Dark is the typical, fast paced thriller which keeps you wanting to read just one more chapter. I have not read the first book of this series, Running With The Devil, and did not feel this hindered my enjoyment of the second book in any way. Our protagonist, Emma Caldridge is drawn into an international crisis over what may be a cache of chemical or biological weapons about to be sold to terrorists on the high seas. The story involves Somalian pirates, a disabled ship, a millionaire with a secret, and of course the good guys from Darkview. It isn't until nearly two-thirds of the way through the book that the plot is finally knitted together. Up until then the book contains almost nonstop action. While I wish the character development was more indepth, I assume this was done in the first novel. Even though this book lacks substance, the characters are likable and the action is fast and furious. If you are looking for a fast paced thriller, this may be right up your alley.

Running DarkBy Jamie FrevelettiThis book was received from Library Thing in the Early Reviewers program.Without reading her first book “Running from the Devil”, I plunged into her second book and felt that it could stand alone. A fast paced thriller that right from the beginning, has you guessing what is taking place after our heroine, Biochemist Emma Caldridge is stabbed with an epi-pen during a marathon race in Africa. What was she shot up with? As she rushes to find answers, we are caught up with drugs, murder, and pirates off the coast of Somalia. The boarding of a cruise ship from a running boat is very suspenseful. Our heroine is fearless. The book is full of interesting characters and lots of intrigue that moves at a fast pace. The author pulls you in and never lets you go.I am definitely going to read “Running from the Devil”, her first book, and will follow her in the future. If you want to read an intriguing thriller, this is for you. You will not be able to put the book down.

After reading this author's first book, Running from the Devil I had to read the second one. She showed so much potential in her first thriller that I wanted to see how it played out.Wow! This was an excellent thriller involving Somali pirates, a cruise ship with a mysterious cargo, and lots of action. I mentioned before how nice it was to read a thriller with a competent female hero and this is true here. Emma will stop at nothing to ensure the success of her mission, even flying into Mogadishu on a khat plane on her way to the cruise ship. The other characters in this book are just as well written including a pair of passengers from Texas that prove to be more than equal to fighting off pirates. Lots of interesting information about Somali pirates is a bonus. This thriller is perfectly paced with enough details and plot twists to keep you interested, but not so many that it just begins to seem pointless. Romantic undercurrents - check, romance as the focus - not. Personally I read thrillers for the action-packed escapism and could care less about who's kissing who so this was just perfect for me.Great, fun, entertaining read - go get this book!

I'm a little late reviewing this for Early Reviewers - I started the book but a few pages in I realized I liked it so much I wanted to start at the beginning so I went out and got the first of the series. Now I've finished both and can say I really enjoyed both!Running Dark is a new adventure for the characters introduced in the first novel of this series, Running with the Devil, although the way the story is told is very similar in both novels. Each character is working independently through interconnected aspects of the same evil plot. This book is different from many other genre novels in that there are really strong male AND female characters. I really liked that the author chose to keep Emma as a strong lead character and didn't just push her into a romantic cohort role. The author also expanded the role of Major Stromeyer into a more interesting character. The men are just as tough and fierce as they were in the first book. All of them are a wee bit unbelievable in their extreme awesomeness but as they are in extremely bad situations so that is probably good! The story itself is interesting, filled with many odd facts that make a reader feel somewhat smarter in the end. Timely with African politics, Somali pirates and pharmaceutical inventions, the story is exciting from start to finish. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good adventure mystery type novel!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! In fact, made the mistake of starting it at bedtime and read straight through the night. The glimpses inside the world of ultra marathons were interesting and the non-stop action of the book made it a great read. I will be watching for more by this author.

A pleasantly pedestrian thriller. This one involves the pirates of Somalia and a Blackwater like security agency. It's got good pacing and the characters are fairly appealing. The one drawback is that often times throughout the book, as you're getting caught up in the action, the writing will take a heaving bosom bent. All of a sudden you are not sure if you're reading a thriller or a romance novel. All in all though, there are worse ways to spend an afternoon.

That company has sunk a number of Mungabe's boats and captured the pirates to stand trial. Mungabe wants them put out of business and The Vulture tells him that a plan to do that is in motion. On the "Kaiser Franz" Cameron Sumner, an employee of Darkview is the first to see the pirates approaching. He is able to fire a few rounds, wounding one pirate and discouraging the others, for the moment. There are several attempts to discredit and disrupt Darkview and Emma volunteers to sneak aboard the ship so, as a chemist, she can analyze the pharmaceuticals. She will have to risk her life on more than one occasion to reach the ship. The story flows skillfully and the suspense is constant. Emma Caldridge, Edward Banner and Cameron Sumner made it out of the Colombian jungle, but they’re adventures are far from being over. While Emma is running an ultramarathon in South Africa, a roadside bomb goes off and she is stuck with an epi-like pen. Whatever is in this pen gives her extreme energy. Little does she know this isn’t the only pen around and it will soon lead her to the pirated waters of Somalia to help save Sumner, in return for saving her life in Running from the Devil. Good news to all of you have been reading Freveletti’s book, she told me through Twitter that she IS working on a third installment for this series!Normally, I am all about the fluff books. I go through work, on a daily basis and have stories about murder, shootings, stabbings, rape, you name it. So by the time I get home, all I want to read about are frilly dresses, high school drama and puppies. So, as you can imagine, coupling some current events into my reading isn’t what I normally go for. But I absolutely love this series, for just that reason. I love that what happens in these books could really happen in real life. And it makes it kind of scary. I did read though that Freveletti had written this before pirating got big. Maybe she shouldn’t write another one if she’s going to cause crazy things like pirates to take over As in the first book, Emma Caldridge is a great character. She’s very empowering for women. She is extremely smart, she thinks on her toes and she makes the rest of us look good, even if we would be sitting in the corner crying while she is stirring concoctions to kill the pirates.I did feel like this one lagged a little compared to the first book. I give Running Dark 4 bookmarks.

I received this book for review from the Early Reviewers Group over at Library Thing. This book is exactly what I hope for when I begin any political/action/military thriller. The action starts on the very first page and follows through to the very end. The author is very adept at building the characters through their actions and not by spelling out page after page of boring back story. The book is filled with enough suspense to keep the pages flying throughout. There are a lot of interesting topics featured in this novel: Somali pirates, chemical weapons, killer jellyfish, German brothels, cruise ships and even good old fashioned corrupt politicians. I was pleasantly surprised when one of these topics would appear. I found myself repeatedly saying, "That's kinda neat."I read a large portion of this book while waiting at the Virginia DMV. I have to say that was the most enjoyable visit there I have ever had. I really enjoyed this one and will probably throw the first novel, Running from the Devil, on my massive to-be-read list.

Wow! From the first sentence to the last this book is filled with rip -roaring action and suspense. This gripping thriller features Emma Caldridge, an ultramarathoner and stellar chemist. While running a gruelling race, a bomb explodes and Emma is injected with an mysterious unknown drug that exponentially increases her endurance and allows her to complete her race in record time. This book is intense - packed with drugs, Somali pirates, wealthy cruise patrons, weapons, terrorism, venomous jellyfish and Special Agent Cameron Sumner. I HAD to keep on reading! I will definitely read Jamie Freveletti,s first book and anything else she writes!

I really enjoyed this book especially having read her first book, Running from the Devil, the week before. Running Dark picks up where the first book left off so I strongly encourage readers to read them in order - although the author provides enough background so the book can standalone I am not sure it would have been as much fun to read. In the latest book, Emma (an ultramarathoner and chemist), Sumner (an agent with a drug taskforce of South America), and Banner (head of Darkview security agency) are trying to get there lives back to some sort of normality after their "adventure" in South America where Sumner saved Emma's life yet of course this does not actually happen. This book starts with Emma running an ultramarathon in South Africa when she is blown out of her shoes by an explosion near her. While still on the ground she is stabbed with an epipen and is immediately able to get back up and finish the rest of the race at a pace faster than she has ever run before. What was in the injection? At the same time, Sumner is providing security for a cruise ship in the Gulf of Aden when it is attacked by Somali pirates and Banner is fighting for the survival of his company (Darkview) in front of Congress and other unknown entities. Are these simultaneous events coincidental or are the related? In this book the author does an excellent job bringing these three storylines together in a fun, actionpacked and easy read. In the previous novel there were questions about the development of her characters - this is not the case here. The familiar characters from the first novel are fleshed out and the characters introduced in this novel are well developed. The combination of science, international political conflict, and the author's superb writing make this a book not to be missed.

Emma Caldridge is running in an ultramarathon in South America. A bomb explodes on the race route, and as Emma recovers from the shock of the blast a stranger injects something into her arm. Amazingly, Emma is able to complete the 55 mile race and does so in record time.Emma’s not the only one under attack. Back in Washington D.C., Emma’s good friend Edward Banner is defending Darkview (a security agency) from the FBI, Congress, & the IRS, due actions that took place in Colombia (Running from the Devil). Cameron Sumner, the man responsible for saving Emma’s life in Colombia, is on board a luxury cruise ship off the coast of Somalia. When the ship is attacked by pirates, Sumner is the only one onboard with a weapon powerful enough to defend the ship, albeit temporarily. The three characters are brought together when Sumner learns that a chemical weapon is onboard the ship. Emma, a chemist, must risk her life to get onboard the ship and determine how how dangerous this weapon is.Once again, Freveletti doesn’t fail to impress me. As in Running from the Devil, there is no lack of action and suspense in Running Dark. From beginning to end, my heart was pounding. Fans of Running from the Devil will be happy to read more about it’s characters, but the author provides enough back story to get a new reader up to speed. My only complaint would be the resolution…it all seemed to end a bit too quickly for me. Granted, it was very intense and exciting, I just wanted a little more. It is obvious that Freveletti plans on continuing the series; I’m definitely interested in reading more from this author!

I was encouraged when I noted that Lee Child, one of my favorite thriller authors, wrote a very favorable blurb in the book calling it an "outstanding debut." Since the book is not a debut, I wondered how well Lee Child knew the author. He was being kind. The book is nowhere near the quality of Child's Jack Reacher thrillers. But it's not a bad book. It's a bit complicated in the beginning-I guess it might have helped if I had read her first book to get the relationship between Emma Caldridge and Sumner straightened out. Emma is a somewhat unbelievable character . She's a slim runner but strong enough and brave enough to shoot guns and jump to a moving ship. Though confusing at times, the book did hold my attention throughout. I did figure out the identity of the mysterious drug early on--hey, she was stabbed with a syringe on the first page. I believe that Freveletti will get better and better as she continues to write thrillers. I hope she does. This is a very good effort, even with it's flaws.

As usual when I received the notice I was to receive a copy of Jamie Freveletti, I hurried out to find a copy of other works by the author. I found one other, Ms. Freveletti’s debut novel, Running With the Devil. Enjoyed it and found that I was eagerly awaiting my copy of Running Dark.Running Dark was equally enjoyable. And as an added bonus I attended one of Jamie’s book signing at a local bookstore prior to reading. It was fun listening to her talk about her research for the book and that made the read much more interesting.Freveletti’s 2nd book is a fast paced thriller that holds your attention from start to finish. Although you don’t need to read the first book to enjoy the second, it does help to understand the complicated relationship between Emma and Sumner. Once again, Emma, a chemist and an ultramarathon runner finds herself doing things she must have only read about it books. In addition to Sumner, characters such as Edward Banner and Carol Stromeyer make a reappearance in this second book. They provide assistance as Emma makes her way from South Africa up to Somalia to assist Sumner in his quest to thwart pirates attempting to take over the cruise ship he is on. Are they after the passengers to acquire a ransom or is the cargo that the ship is carrying?I found it a bit odd that many of the characters seemed to know one another. For example, Banner and Stromeyer knew Wilson Vanderlock, the pilot who flew Emma into Somalia. You also needed a score card to determine who was working with whom. But I finally decided that probably was indicative to the region where people working to make a buck were willing to go with the highest bidder. And these people just seemed to appear right when Emma needed them to help further her travels. But despite that I thought the book was great and if you like fast paced thrillers this one is for you.

This was a fast paced, high action thriller. There were three distinctly different but related subplots occurring in different parts of the world at the same time, guaranteeing action on almost every page. The characters were adequately developed with a couple of exceptions, most notably The Vulture. I would have liked to know more about him.If you like romance, it was there but without the sex. I think this was a weak point in the writing. I have nothing against romance but I'm not into romance novels. That was the feel this romance had. It should be more subtly interwoven into the story rather than trying to take over portions of it, especially in a thriller like this. There were a couple of loose ends that I would have liked to have seen tied off. For example, I would have liked to know which of the passengers on the ship were the drug/arms dealers there for the auction of the new addiction creating drug. Several characters were partially developed with this potential, but it was a part of the story left hanging. While not of major importance to the story, and characters we will probably never hear of in future books, I still would have liked to know.I received this book through an Early Reviewers Club without knowledge of Freveletti's writings, but enjoyed it enough that I completed it in one sitting. I anticipate going back and reading Running from the Devil, her first book, and will watch for future publishings as well.

Emma is a chemist and also runs ultramarathon's. On here most recent run, a car bomb explodes next to her. She is knocked silly, but not killed. While she is in a daze, someone injects here with a chemical via epi-pen. From that point on, she becomes entangled in a chemical terrorism plot that also mixes in Somali pirates. She meets up with Cameron Sumner whom she apparently has a past with. They met in Columbia. Everything ends well with alot of action in between. The Columbia connection was mentioned quite often in the book. I imagine it would be good to read Freveletti's first book before this one just so you know what they are talking about. Although, it isn't really recommended reading before the action begins in this book. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good terroristic action adventure.

One would expect that when ultramarathoner Emma Caldridge is blown off her feet by a car bomb near the halfway point of South Africa's Comrades race, she would call it a day. Emma, feeling the ill effects of the run even before the bomb blast, is too stunned by the explosion to protest when a stranger injects her with a mysterious drug via the EpiPen in his hand. All she knows for sure is that the drug immediately has her back on her feet, her race injuries are quickly healing, and she cannot wait to get on down the road. From this point, the plot of "Running Dark" moves as quickly toward the finish line as Emma does. "Running Dark" is Jamie Freveletti's second novel featuring Emma Caldridge and Cameron Sumner and much of what happened in the first book, "Running from the Devil," has an impact on character relationships in "Running Dark." Most importantly, Cameron Sumner saved Emma's life during a hostage situation in the first book, and in this one, she is determined to return the favor. For much of the book, Freveletti aptly juggles three separate, and exciting, plotlines. The first involves Emma's efforts to identify the performance enhancing drug she was injected with, and to make her way to a cruise ship off the coast of Somalia where Cameron Sumner is desperately hoping to hold off the Somali pirates trying to take it. The second plotline focuses on the cruise ship itself and Cameron's efforts to organize the crew and passengers in a way that gives them at least a fighting chance against the pirates. Cameron has smuggled a sniper's rifle on board the ship but, with the exception of a supersonic noise generator, that is about the only real weapon he has. The third plotline follows the efforts of Darkview Security's Edward Banner and Carol Strohmeyer to fight off the efforts of the mysterious "Vulture" and a ruthless Senator who want to shut the company down. Each of the plotlines is interesting but the most suspenseful one involves Emma's determination to get to the ill fated cruise ship. Once she finally gets to the region, the support organized by Darkview starts to break down and she is forced to think on the run if she is to survive the ordeal, much less actually board a cruise ship already under the watchful eye of a big shot Somali pirate. Freveletti closes the book with a frantic fight to the finish between thirty or so pirates and a handful of people trying to create weapons from what they can find on the ship. "Running Dark" is filled with impressive, and likable, characters, and readers will want to follow them into their next adventure. I do wish that their first book backstory had been told in more detail, but that is a small quibble. Rated at: 4.0

This is the follow-up to last year's debut novel "Running From The Devil". Once again we have Emma Caldridge, brilliant chemist and ultramarathon runner; Edward Banner of the very powerful security company Darkview; Richard Stark of the mega-corporation Price, and Special Agent Cameron Sumner. However, there is WAY too much going on in this book for us to do more than acknowledge their familiarity before the action is up and roaring and pages are being turned at a blistering pace. All wound up together, tighter and tighter as the book goes on, is a mysterious drug that improves endurance but creates odd manifestations of various addictions, a Somali pirate attack on a brand new cruise ship, and a terrorist threat that may involve the deadly compound sarin mixed in with a medical aid package. It's all edge of the seat stuff that will make this an excellent summer read (though maybe now a beach read--there are killer jellyfish in the mix as well!).
