About this ebook
When I turned twenty I took the oath to protect, and for the last five years I’ve kept that promise. Currently, I’ve got a gig as a kind of one-witch secret service to the British Prime Minister—using a combination of potions, spells, explosions, mind-reading, and general butt-kicking skills, I’ve saved him from so many assassins we’ve quit counting. Umm, did I mention explosions? Yeah, well: we all have our talents, and mine’s combustion.
After that recent incident when those stupid warlocks tried to sacrifice me, I decided I’m going to write everything down. That way if some creep knocks me off, someone will know what happened. But hopefully this diary won’t be all about maiming and killing. I’d like to write some sexy bits, too. Especially about Dr. Sam, who’s smart, funny, adorable, everything I’d want in a man—except he’s a warlock. Sorry, that’s a big no-no in Bronwyn’s book of dating material. I might as well face it: witches don’t do so well in the boyfriend department. Somehow, men find me a tad intimidating. I can’t imagine why.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Another Candace Havens, set in the same universe with the same characters, just a different MC. And boy did it NOT hold up well to the test of time. I remember liking Bronwyn (the MC) because she was her own person and powerful and didn’t let anyone intimidate her. And she’s till all those things, but the rest of her is just so emotionally shallow and her romance was written … well, I’ve read more believable romances in 80’s teen fiction. The non-romance part of the book didn’t do so well either. The antagonists were all juvenile in the extreme (they all kept saying “Die Witch!”) and it was all just so silly.I also got extremely irritated with the author re-writing history: Like a Charm takes place before Christmas and the characters’ relationship is resolved and their embracing their HEA well before then. But this book takes place 3 months later and there are scenes with Kira and Caleb where they’re still in the hand holding stage and haven’t yet “done the nasty”.Anyway – not a great book.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Bronwyn is a witch, the one-witch secret service to the British Prime Minister, somehow living in the US. Written as a diary she accounts her life as she tries to balance her life with her job, trying to keep her mind on the work while also enjoying the explosions she's able to.It's readable and I wouldn't be put off reading the others in the series but not a keeper.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5foi gave me this book as she went to the book signing saturday and thought i would love this book. and i did! it tells the story of bronwyn, a high witch, whose job is to protect the british prime minister. she can read minds and make people (read warlocks) and objects explode. this book was fast-paced and full of action with just a bit of romance thrown in. there are things reminiscent of buffy such as all the weird named demons and the magic shop, element of charmed with all the bad warlocks out to steal a witch's power. what i found really interesting though is in candace havens' world, everyone knows about witches. they don't have to hide or keep themselves a secret. not to say that everyone likes them or isn't afraid of them. i like how the book is written in diary format and bronwyn just plain kicks ass. if you like a little witchy magic and are in the mood for light reading, definitely check this out.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Bronwyn is a high Witch, working as a kind of one-witch secret service to the British Prime Minister. Her arsenal includes a combination of potions, spells, explosions, mind-reading tricks, and general butt-kicking skills. While she's traveling the globe to protect the PM and a middle eastern sheik (I'm not sure that she actually ever specifies what country he's from), she's pining for her warlock back home, Dr. Sam... despite the fact that she's promised herself not to fall for any man—especially a warlock. This book is written in a diary/journal format, which in this case was actually a drawback as I don't think that format worked all that well with this story, and didn't add much to it at all. The storyline itself was interesting though, and I was kept in the dark about who the culprit behind all the assassination attempts was all the way to the end. I have the next book in this series, Charmed and Ready, waiting on Mt. TBR and hope to get to it shortly.I actually hedged between giving this a 6 or a 7, but went with a 6, because of my complaint about the journal/diary format.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Awful book. I had to throw it away after I had read the first 90 pages, so its only registered here to remind me never to buy another book by Candace Havens - or published by Berkley
