Poppy Pretzel – Passage into Puberty

    CHAPTER ONE

Levi opened his eyes slowly and stared at the clock radio, the alarm blasting at him. He groaned. It’s too early to get up, he thought.

    Brrrrrrtttt....

He let out a huge fart, and after a few seconds, lifted the blanket to take in the smell.

Ahhh, what a ripper, he murmured proudly, then rolled over to catch a few more z’s. As he did, he felt something strange in his boxers.

    Something’s not right, he thought.

He lifted the blanket again to see what was wrong, the last remnants of his fart seeping out. There was a wet patch on the front of his boxer shorts. A dark, wet spot.

Levis head spun with what could’ve happened:

    OMG~ I’ve wet the bed.

OMG ~ The cats crawled in and peed on me.

OMG ~ I’ve farted, followed through and ohhh, made a mess of everything.

Cautiously, he felt the front of his boxers, and it wasn’t wet, more... sticky.

For a few seconds he was puzzled, then realized what had happened. Flashbacks of awkward father-son talks about wet dreams and puberty not long ago.

Oh yeah, that’s what it’ll be, he thought. He let out a long sigh, realizing he’d been holding his breath.

He felt the front of his boxers again, relieved that it hadn’t been Viper the cat.

Without lifting the blanket, he slipped off his boxers and chucked them across the room onto the floor, landing next to yesterday’s socks, Saturday’s football shorts, Sunday’s basketball uniform and a collection of grotty-looking school uniform pieces.

Come on Levi, time to get up, called his mother, Milly, from downstairs.

He pulled the pillow over his head to block out her voice, thinking too early, need more sleep! But then the smell of breakfast wafted upstairs to his room, and he quickly changed his mind. He threw back the blanket swung his legs out and realized he probably should have a shower.

He rummaged through the pile of clothes on the floor and found a towel, grabbed a clean pair of boxers from his drawer, pulled the blanket up to cover the sheet, and for the first time in years Levi had a shower in the morning. It only took two minutes, but he felt better afterwards.

Standing in front of the bathroom mirror, he brushed his hair and then his teeth. He turned his head to the side to check out his left profile, then the other way to check out his right.

Not bad, he thought to himself.

He pulled a few different faces, pouted, grinned, smiled, frowned. Then his eyes spotted it.

    Zit. Still there! 2 weeks!

What do I have to do to get rid of that zit?

He looked at his hair and using his fingers he pushed his hair to one side then the other, trying different looks.

Maybe I should put some gloop in it like Lily.

His twin sister Lily, seemed to own most of the shelf and drawer space, with her hair ties, hair clips, hairspray, hair gel, hair wax, hair mousse – and that was just some of her hair stuff! And that wasn’t even taking into account the drawer where she kept her makeup and creams.

He flicked his head around to see what his hair would do and considered using some of Lily’s wax to give it some shape, but stopped when he saw his face in the mirror.

Nah, that’ll do, he thought. He could hear Lily coming towards the bathroom, so he decided to leave her one of his farts – an aromatic reminder that he was thinking of her. He left before he could smell his own cleverness.

Back in his room he heard Levi Sprocket, you’re an animal! from Lily and he smiled to himself.

Tummy – Gurgle, groan, gurgle. Feed me!

He quickly tried to find something to wear in his totally messy room, which was just the way he liked it and because it was easier than cleaning it up. Levi’s room was an expression of his personality – disorganized and grubby. Where the clothes fell, they stayed. Screwed-up balls of paper were scattered around the bin, but none had actually made it into the bin. Along with the paper balls were apple cores, banana peels, muesli bar wrappers, and sandwich crusts. None of them had made it into the bin either. The bin, in fact, was empty. Posters of soccer players and popstars, plus photos of his schoolmates littered the wall in no order or flair, just stuck on with pins and tape. A green lava lamp that was never turned off was the only real lighting in the room because the central light globe had blown and it hadn’t been replaced in months. As he rarely opened his curtains, the room had a slimy, green color to it.

Levi loved his room. He was oblivious to the color, the chaos, or the smell. It just didn’t matter to him. But it drove his mother nuts.

He opened his chest of drawers looking for school shorts – empty!

He opened his wardrobe to look for school shirts – empty!

He searched under his bed, behind the door and under the blanket – empty!

Finally, he stared at the pile of dirty clothes spread across his floor. The vivid red and green of his school uniform colors stuck out amongst the socks, jocks, boxers, track pants, t-shirts, and hoodies. Dirty. All of it. Not one thing on the floor was clean.

At that moment, Milly knocked on his door, waited a few seconds and came in. His family knew to knock on Levi’s door or he’d get very cranky. He was a private person and hated people just walking in unannounced.

You’re not dressed Levi, and we need to leave in twenty minutes, she said hastily.

Got nothing to wear, he groaned looking at the floor.

Milly looked at the pile of dirty clothes, shook her head in disappointment and said, Levi, we’ve spoken about this before. If you don’t get the washing into the laundry I’m not coming to get it for you. Is it that hard to toss it in the laundry chute which is 3 meters from your bedroom door?

Actually, it is. I mean, Mum, 3 meters is 300 centimeters, 3,000 millimeters. Way too far for me, he teased smugly.

Yeah, laugh it up, funny boy, said Milly with a smile. But what are you going to wear today?

I dunno. I can’t find anything clean. He picked up a shirt that had a big grass stain across the front. This is okay, sniffing it.

    Are you serious? That’s disgusting.

    What’ll I do then?

"That’s up to you. You can wear something that’s smelly and spend the day alone
