About this ebook

Day in and day out they faced the worst atrocities that Manhattan had to offer.

As veteran NYPD Homicide detectives, Jack Grayson and Kate Devereaux have experienced the worst of mankind; they’ve hunted down sadistic suspects and waded through chilling, grisly crime scenes. They’ve endured the horrific nightmares, the heartbreaking losses and they’ve made personal sacrifices that have nearly cost them everything. For eight years, they’ve been willing to lay down their lives for the other - as partners, as cops and as friends. It is a bond seemingly built upon the badge, and it’s always been kept ruthlessly professional.

Until one case leads them to the haunting shores of eastern Ireland, and to a crumbling castle that belonged to the Templar Knights hundreds of years ago. In the gray afternoon fog, Jack’s childhood visit to those very same ruins is revealed and his memories begin to unlock the preordained fate they’ve been headed towards all of these years.
It is there, in the mystical and lulling shadows cast by the majestic Baldugan walls, that the ordinary will become eternally extraordinary.

A hard climb. Worn flag steps,

    Steep. Slippery.

    Thick walls sweated

In the spiraling dark. Then bright

    sun on the narrow parapet.

    What passed between us there

    On Baldungan's height?

    From Baldungan Castle

    by James J. McAuley

He feels them coming, he always does.

Sometimes they arrive together, sometimes one-by-one. There is no pattern to how or when they arrive. Sometimes it happens just after the sun has slipped beneath the horizon, and other times it occurs in the dead of night. They have come here in the frigid desolation of winter and in the lush greens of summer. There have been weeks when he has watched it happen twice, and long years that have passed with no one at all.

But never once has he seen anyone leave alone.

They are sometimes mismatched. The old and the young, the angry and the content. He doesn't define them as strangers when they arrive – they all have a conjoined history prior to their arrival. But when they retreat they are irrevocably together, always and forever.

    Bound.

He never interferes, but he does collect the things they leave behind. They are the tokens that chronicle the existence of each and every Pair.

It's been hundreds of years. They all are led here in one way or another. They never see him, they cannot.

    The trinkets collect.

    The Order continues.

It only takes a moment to realize that it is she who fits in here, not him.

He watches as she walks further up the hill, her steps slow and unsure. Her head is up as if she is bracing for something, but she moves forward and away from him in any case. The air around him is colder and lighter here than it is in New York. It seems odd to him that air should have a weight to it, but it does and he doesn't question the startling difference in it on this side of the Atlantic.

There is a chilling breeze, but he doesn't notice how it plays with him. Instead, he watches as the breeze dances around her, fascinated by the way it lifts the edges of her inadequate navy cardigan sweater and the way it rustles through the long strands of her copper-tinged
