I arrived to the hospital in record time. Luckily, I wasn’t pulled over for speeding. I was only going 85 mph, but that’s still too fast. It took me a while to find my way to the wing Zack was in. Apparently, an ambulance brought him in this morning.
What happened?
I asked my father.
We don’t know yet. They say he has several broken bones and is bruised up pretty badly,
father explained. He is conscious, but his jaw is messed up, so the doctors haven’t been able to get much out of him.
I felt so bad for my brother. At least he looked like he would come through the incident fine. Zack would take a while to heal, but I’d have my brother back. I was allowed to go in and see him once he woke up. Hey baby bro…
I said, cheerfully. I wasn’t quite sure if he had forgiven me for Matthew’s kiss yet, so I wanted to tread carefully. Can I come in?
Zack nodded and made a sound that might have been him saying, Of course.
He seemed genuinely happy to see me, but I still wanted him to know what really happened between me and Matthew. I didn’t kiss Matthew,
I explained. I found him in my room and told him you were looking for him. He said he saw me looking at him like I had the hots for him. I didn’t. I hope you know that. When I tried to take him downstairs to find you, he pinned me to the door and kissed me.
I was rushing my words trying to get everything out before he got mad at me, or went unconscious or something.
Zack motioned for a chalk board that was sitting beside the bed. I got it for him and he wrote: It’s okay. I love you.
He used the chalk board to tell me what happened to him the best he could. He still couldn’t move his arms too well, so he only wrote the key words down. I had to fill in the blanks on my own. Apparently, he was staying at a cheap motel and made friends with some guys. They pretended to like him and told him that he should come back to their room to party. I didn’t really think of Zack as a partier, but he was upset, so there’s no telling how he might’ve behaved. I don’t blame him for wanting to just have fun and not think about anything serious for once. When he got into the room with the two guys, they blindfolded him and tied him up. They kicked and hit him while calling him names, like Queer and Faggot. The pain caused him to pass out. The housekeepers of the motel found him when they were cleaning rooms, covered in blood and urine.
I felt so bad for my brother. It’s hard to believe that in this day and age, there are still so many intolerant people…people who would hate and kill someone because they are gay. If they only knew it wasn’t a choice. They didn’t make a conscious decision to be straight, so I don’t know why they think gay people made the decision to be gay. I wanted to hug my brother but I was afraid I’d cause him even more pain. I settled for softly kissing him on the forehead, being careful not to touch the rest of his body.
