Andrea Hertach has been an elementary school teacher for over 27 years. Swamped is her first children’s novel but she has been a prolific writer since the young age of 13. She has been published in various magazines and industry publications and enjoys sharing great stories in a variety of genres. She has her Masters degree in Education and lives in Ontario, Canada with her husband, actor Matthew R. Lawrence, and her two children Marley and Aaron. Chapter One
The sun rose slowly over the cedar hedge at the edge of the garden. The morning dew moistened lily petals and blades of grass. The scent of lavender hung in the soft breeze.
Everyone was crammed in around the stump waiting to hear what Charles would say.
All right,
he began. Everyone gather around. This meeting is extremely important. Our very lives depend upon it.
There was a hush among the garden creatures as they waited for the toad to continue.
We are in a state of emergency,
Charles continued. The humans are planning to fill in the swamp behind our garden home to build a game centre. This will have an impact on us all. We must work together to put a stop to this before it is too late.
Everyone turned to someone next to them and they all started talking simultaneously.
What’s a game centre?
"Who told him that?
What’s going on?
Listen up everybody.
A strong voice interjected.
One by one grasshoppers, bees, dragon flies, butterflies, lady bugs and assorted garden dwellers turned their many eyes back to the stump that Charles the Toad used as a stage to address the community. Only now he was no longer alone. Standing next to him was Kurt the Chickadee.
He stood regal and commanding, yet peaceful and calm. This helped the nervous and agitated creatures settle down and begin to listen.
I have news,
Kurt began as he stood next to Charles. "Charles has had to announce the sad news of the swamp demolition to you and I know it is a terrible shock. When I was visiting family at the swamp just yesterday our gathering was sadly interrupted when a group of humans showed up and got out of their metal transportation devices. They walked around the water and from the trees where we were perched we could hear their plans. I flew to Charles right away and told him what I had discovered. We talked about it for a long time and we decided the only way we can save our community is if we
