About this ebook
Thousands of years ago, twelve-year-old Jono was in Grade One at Mentor’s School of Wizardry, a place in Middleland where warlocks and witches learned to use their powers. Mentor upset the pupils one morning when he announced that wizards should no longer use their magic to help people. The same morning, the Grade One teacher, Melora, demanded that Jono give to her the amulet that he had been wearing from his first day of school — the amulet that protects a wizard from other wizards. Jono refused to remove the amulet, and Melora became unpleasant. Jono’s classmate Chloë and some other Grade Ones scolded Jono for being troublesome but Jono decided to flee the Grade One classroom and, later, the school.
On the same day, a senior pupil, fifteen-year-old Euphonius, a boy fancied by Chloë, also fled the school rather than surrender his amulet to Mentor. After an encounter with slavers and a madman, Euphonius met Jono at the home of Selma, who had been a teacher at Mentor’s school. Because Selma taught Potions and Poisons, Euphonius hoped she could help him and Jono to discover why Mentor wanted everyone’s amulet.
Selma could not help the boys because she was under an enchantment. To undo Selma’s enchantment, Euphonius and Jono flew to Southland to find a plant that grew there. Monsters, villains, snakes and other nasty surprises awaited Euphonius and Jono in Southland but they were able to find the plant they wanted.
Selma, Euphonius and Jono made a plan to make the teachers tell the truth about what was happening at the school. Although Selma, Euphonius and Jono were able to discover who had brought bad times to the school, they were disappointed by how their plan ended. They set aside their disappointment very quickly, however, because a very special guest visited the school.
