    Acknowledgements:

I’d like to thank the growing number of readers who are enjoying the Clearwater Series and who have sent me their kind comments – even the lady who wrote to tell me that the ending to Clearwater Heat ‘sucked’ and that there had better be another ending available. You do not know how encouraging it is for a writer like me to read that his or her work has been read and then re-read and enjoyed. Beyond that, to be told that I had better be writing quickly because of the interest in what is going to happen next is gratifying. Thank you Joe and Mia fans, whoever and wherever you are.

I’d like to thank my wife, Marsha and daughter, Jane as well as Annmarie Schwanke for their masterful work in editing this novel. Like Magic, they disappeared on the last book, but they are back. Their efforts have made the story much better and the content easier for you, the reader, to decipher. I would also like to thank them for a couple of their content suggestions, but maybe not all. A few of their ideas were just plain dumb. Example – maybe you could have Joe and Mia do a tour of the holy land and they could ride camels. When I asked if there was a story to go along with the camels and the tour, I got, Make something up. Give me a break!

    Warnings:

Note to little kids: Bugger off – go read Captain Underpants.

Note to all young adult readers:

As a former teacher – and therefore someone sworn to be concerned about the minds of our young people – I have to warn the under eighteen group that Clearwater Intrigue, much like the other books in this series, contains a number of bad words, but maybe not as many as a few of the earlier works. And really, what is a bad word? I must also tell you that you will come across some pretty suggestive scenes and some very bad people – but nothing is likely to overly stimulate you or disgust you. Sorry about that. In any case, good reading bubba – enjoy.

    Best Regards,

    Doc

[b]Note: Clearwater Beach and the area surrounding it is truly my idea of paradise. It is a beautiful place to visit and to live – if you can afford it. The violence depicted in the Clearwater series is just that – fiction – i.e. – it never happened. Go there and find out for yourself. You’ll love the place. Say ‘hi’ to Betsy if you grab a bite to eat at Cooters, but don’t start chatting with Frankie Donner; you’ll lose hours of your holiday.

A few Reader Responses to Clearwater Journals after it appeared on Free e-books:[b]

If you like Jack Reacher, then you’ll like this. I enjoyed this book very much. It was well written and tense with a dash of humour and kept me involved throughout. If it had been written by Lee Child, it would be an international bestseller. – Morris Kenyon

I have read all of the Clearwater books and enjoyed them all. Clearwater Heat is such a cliff hanger that makes it mandatory to read the next book. I hope you are writing fast and will have it available soon. – Cynthia Brooks August 28, 2012 at 9:22 pm

    Dude – this series rocks!

Hi Al, I have read all of your Clearwater Books. I love reading about Joe, Mia, Max and everybody. I was excited to see Clearwater Magic is available through Smashword. I have a Nook, and they are too slow in getting books, so I downloaded Clearwater Magic through Smashwords. I was so disappointed to see it's only 127 pages. Please keeping writing all of these great books, but give us more to read in each one. 127 pages is just a tidbit, so please give us more Doc, Mia, Max, Coop and Mrs. Thornberry in each book, because they deserve more reading material. I really hope there is a follow up to Clearwater Magic soon, because I'll be finished it by tomorrow. Thanks.

NOTE: The number of pages is the result of formatting. Each of the last books has been around 55000 words.

I just finished Clearwater Magic and I continue to love this series. I am looking forward to more clues to the enigmatic Max and will Doug be okay??? Keep them coming, Al! I eagerly await Doc's next day in paradise. – Jackie K.

I just finished reading Clearwater Showdown, I got Clearwater Journals as a free Nook book, but it was so good I had to buy the other books. I have truly enjoyed reading this series, and hope you plan on taking Joe, Mia, Coop and Ida Mae further. I'm anxiously awaiting another installment. Maybe Joe can take a trip to our area (Spokane, WA) or Glacier Park in Montana? We have a hockey team with lots of Canadian kids on it – the Spokane Chiefs. Can't wait to read more! Maybe see the movie?!

The next endorsement is one that I cherish. It was written by another Canadian writer, RJ Parker.

I read a lot of books in various genres. I really enjoy reading a series of books that have continuous characters. I'm sharing my favorite series of all time with you my friends and fans and hope that you start this and love it as much as I do. I have two more to read which I will do over the next few days. It's the Clearwater series by my friend and fellow Canadian author Mr. Al Rennie. The first book in the series is the Clearwater Journals and it's free. This series is available in all the markets, ie, Amazon, Barnes, Smashwords etc. As an avid reader for 35 years, I'm declaring this series to be my all-time favorite. It simply rocks!! Fast-paced, lovable characters and Al has a great sense of humor. If you're having a bad day, any one of these books will make you laugh. This is Al's website with the books in order.... Let me know if you start these books and what you think. – Blessings, RJ

    Chapter 1

January, 2013 – Clearwater Beach, Florida

We’re being sued again, Joe. Fred said as he wandered up to the lounge chair on the helicopter pad where I was hard at work trying against all odds to read a statistical report put together by one of the staff working for our lawyer, Bob Morse. I was also working on my tan; I call it multi-tasking.

I didn’t do it – whatever it was, I said quickly while doing an even faster mental inventory of the things I had done recently that might prompt a legal response. There were only a few of that sort of thing that came to mind right away.

No, someone else in the company is named in the suit this time, Fred said watching a seagull struggle against a wind current about five feet above his head.

What is it this time then? I asked while betting with myself that this had to do with the protection side of our business, again.

Some quite well endowed young twenty something missy, who admits that she might have been inebriated at the time, claims that Bobby Bonz rubbed against her boobs at that rock concert we did the backstage security for three weeks ago.

And she just realized it now?

    I guess…

What does Bobby say about it?

He says that there was a crush outside the dressing room, and she might have been the one who got pressed up against him. He says his hands might have brushed against her chest but the place was pandemonium; he’s not certain. Bobby also says that if they did, it was really just an accident and an act of self defence.

How much makes it all go away?

I talked with Morse’s guy who deals with these frivolous kinds of suits. He thinks low ball her at one hundred and fifty bucks with a letter of apology and tickets to the next concert in town should do it.

What do you think, Coop? You and Mrs. Thornberry are our moral compass on these kinds of things. Regardless of the expense, should we fight it to the death in court to preserve the reputation of our youngest employee and demonstrate solidarity for all employees, or should we just throw in the towel?"

In actual fact, I believed that something like this would come down to a ‘he said, she said’ deal and it would never get to court. Some money might change hands and an apology might be made, but not really much more. Certainly, nothing to lose any sleep over...

Maybe we don’t fight it too hard this time… Coop said.

Want to explain why we are going soft on this…?

Bobby also said that if he remembers correctly and, ‘if she is the one he’s thinking about, those boobs felt pretty damn good…’ He asked for her phone number so that he can go and apologize personally.

Case closed, I said with a smile and settled back.

I have another one of a different sort and more personal for you, Joe. It was in a hand delivered letter a bicycle courier dropped off here about ten minutes ago.

Oh yeah, Coop, what would that be?

Do you remember telling me about that attractive young woman last year who played you like a cheap violin just after Frankie Donner’s grand-daughter, Michelle was abducted?

Yeah, not happily though; it wasn’t my most inspiring or noble moment… actually embarrassing as hell is what it was, why…?

I think she’s back and she wants to meet you…

How do you know that? I asked honing in on Fred and the folded letter he was holding.

Carol Bailey was the name that she had used the last time I had talked with her. The first time we met, I was humiliating myself in an artificial insemination clinic and she was introduced to me as Mrs. Randall. After that first meeting, she led me to believe that she wanted me to be the father of her baby. At least, that’s what she told me. In fact, that was just the tuning up phase of the cheap violin act to follow – me. In reality, she had been setting me up for a revenge manipulation you would not believe even if I wanted to tell you. I’ve been trying to forget the embarrassing events of that time almost as hard as I’ve tried to forget why I am no longer a cop with a promising future with the Toronto Metro major crimes unit. But I have the scars and the periodic nightmares to remind me of that personal tragedy. Carol Bailey wasn’t a tragedy, but it was all pretty frigging humiliating none the less and I’m not likely to forget it any time soon. As I recall, I also ended up taking completely unwarranted credit for using two more Pinellas’ County body bags on that one.

I think this letter is from her.

Why do you think that, Coop? I asked as I sat forward and extended my hand.

I read it. She writes a pretty good letter, lots of innuendo anyway.

And here I was about to give you credit for your ‘Sherlock Holmes’ like deductive reasoning. Let’s see it.

Fred handed me the letter and looked up at the sky and said, A bit windy, but a nice day uh? There’s no rain in the forecast until the middle of next week.

Instead of wandering back down to his own office as I thought he might, he sat down on the chaise lounge beside mine. I wondered if we were going to have a ‘come to Jesus’ talk or if he was just curious as to how I might respond to the letter. We were up on the helicopter pad on top of my brother’s large yacht. The boat serves as our CHIPs office and is docked at the Clearwater Beach Marina.

The letter was in a heavy bonded cream coloured stiff paper envelope. I sniffed it surreptitiously just in case there was a suggestion of something more than an exchange of pleasantries inside. I sensed that I had caught Fred’s attention. But why wouldn’t I take a quick inhale?
