    Introduction

Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information upon it.—Samuel Johnson

This is a popular quote that was relevant when it was written in 1775 and will, I predict, remain so far into the future. Even in this time of accelerating technical advances in the areas of search, big data, and the powerful collaborative possibilities of social media, researching and finding information still boils down to the simplicity of this quote.

The goal of this book is to help procurement professionals find information upon the areas of strategic sourcing, supplier management and purchasing.

Supplier risk has become a topic of great importance as more companies expand their operations globally and are relying on suppliers in different parts of the world, sometimes at the mercy of forces beyond their control (tsunamis, storms, political unrest). This has led to a more focused examination of supplier intelligence and the need to understand the markets and industries in which suppliers are operating.

As a procurement professional, it’s a best practice that you make decisions based on research and information that is current, relevant and of the highest quality. The goal in using these resources is to help you stay in front of supplier risk issues or keep from being blindsided by a disruptive technology or unexpected event.

The internet certainly makes readily available information that is useful to you for procurement purposes. However, it’s easy to get frustrated with the information you find because the results are either too high level or not specific enough.

On the flip side, the valuable information used for critical decision-making often times is not free, and can be very expensive. Choosing the wrong resources to search leads to inefficiency, and often, paying too much for information that is not on target.

This guide highlights the best resources to use, always with an eye for value and with the understanding of the crucial role that quality information plays in the decision-making process.

    Miscellaneous Note:

There are many varied views concerning the differences between and definitions of purchasing vs. procurement vs. sourcing. For the purpose of this book, I am using the term procurement as defined by PurchasingInsight.com as my guide in determining the scope of resources to include.

To define procurement broadly, ‘Procurement’ is the overarching function that describes the activities and processes to acquire goods and services. Importantly, and distinct from ‘purchasing,’ procurement involves the activities involved in establishing fundamental requirements, sourcing activities such as market research and vendor evaluation and negotiation of contracts. It can also include the purchasing activities required to order and receive goods.
