Introduction to Yoga Energetics (return to Contents)

Yoga has different meanings among different groups of people. To some, yoga means joining the individual consciousness with the universal consciousness, to others it means unifying one’s mind and body. To some scholars of Indian yoga, yoga means submission of the lower self to the higher self, meaning submitting the ego to the divine within. The word yoga actually sprang out of a Sanskrit word yuj which means oneness; unification; to join; to weld together. This means even marriage, for example, which indicates the binding of two individuals together or putting different ideas together by different individuals or groups can be translated as yoga. The formation of the United Nations, the creation of the confederation in Canada or the creation of the European Union in recent years can also be called yoga.

When there is harmony between different groups in society, man and woman, mind and body, the yin and yang energies in nature, all internal organs in the human body and so on, any of that can be called yoga. Such unity can only be achieved by the right understanding, right contemplation, right conduct, right consumption, and right practice. It reminds me of the time when I was growing up when farmers used to join two male cows together to cultivate the land or carry heavy objects. The wooden bar that connected the cows by their necks was called the yuj.

There were two interesting points that I witnessed by watching that event as I remember. First, when both cows were cooperating with one another, everything went smoothly, and both cows were comfortable and at ease. But every now and then, when one cow became rebellious and did not cooperate, there was a struggle between them and the farmer had to interfere or discipline them. Secondly, the cows chosen to yuj had to be compatible in regards to their size and strength, which indicates that equality is the basis for unity. Similarly, overtime the inequality, injustice and unfairness between males and females in society, between family members as well as between members of society as a whole has weakened humanity and created deficiency/excess syndromes. These conflicts have led to wars, aggressions, violence, greed, poverty and false ambitions in every culture around the world.

Therefore, although yoga means unification, we preserve the word for the individual unification or group unification which is for a good cause. In our definition, yoga is any joined effort between the mind and body of an individual, between groups of people or between several groups that has the cause of justice, the promotion of peace, or bringing harmony and good among people as its sole purpose. Any of these efforts we call yoga, and the participants of such efforts we call yogis.

All of this is to say that yoga is more than just a few postures, breathing or meditation practices. It is a way of life. In the individual, it produces mental-physical health and spiritual growth. In general, it promotes equality, moderation and justice, without which harmony and peace cannot be achieved.

The system of Yoga Energetics presented in this pillar was developed by Sensei Yula over decades of study and practice
