Four Days in Bucharest
()
About this ebook
In this article we discuss our four day trip to central Bucharest. We present a day-by-day account of our activities, visiting Revolution Square, Herastrau Park, National Village Museum, Arch of Triumph, the Old Town, Palace of the People, Gara de Nord, and Constitution Square. In essence we completed or partially completed three well defined walks around Bucharest with the assistance of the Metro.
For each of these activities we provide our impressions, key facts, a selection of photos, and the relevant opening times, entrance fees, and references and resources. We also provide a brief selective historical account of Bucharest related to the sights we visited. References and resources identified throughout the article are consolidated in an Appendix. The conclusion presents our highlights, disappointments and lessons learnt.
Bucharest is slowly emerging as an interesting city from a tourism and business perspective. While it does not have the significant historical buildings of Istanbul or the “chic” atmosphere of Budapest, Bucharest has its own particular charm (e.g. friendly people, beautiful buildings, relaxing parks, and a rich and diverse culture). We found there was a lack of tourism information and tourist facilities about Bucharest. Hopefully this eBook will make a contribution and encourage you to visit.
Take three/four days to visit Bucharest on your way from Istanbul to Budapest, it may surprise you.

IntroductionOS Wayfarer is not a business or an enterprise but a passion! At its core, OS Wayfarer is about self-publishing eBooks, especially our travel eBooks. So far, we have self-published eight travel eBooks.OS Wayfarer is sustained through the partnership of Graham and Katherine Kingston. It is our passion for travel, and my (Graham’s) passion (some might say obsession) for personal computing, photography, and project management, that has resulted in OS Wayfarer. Fortunately, Katherine knows her history, provides great editing, calms Graham’s exuberance, anchors the outfit in some reality, and ensures a measure of class. We endeavour, for less than the price of a cup of coffee, to share our travel experiences with you. We hope you enjoy our eBooks. Our approachFour key principles underpin our approach:•We love to take a “Do it Yourself” approach as much as is feasible: in respect of our travel, eBooks.•A cost-effective approach is always front of mind.•A commitment to maintaining standards is important to us.•A desire to share our knowledge and expertise thereby helping others to enhance their travel experiences. We strive to be professional; and to adopt practical, affordable, achievable, and effective approaches to the development and publishing of our eBooks. Our backgroundsTravelWe are retired baby boomers and we have been at this caper, in one form or another since about 2009.We travelled as a part of our professional working lives but to less developed countries. We lived and worked in Bandung, Indonesia (four years), Kitwe, Zambia (four years) and Kuching, Sarawak (two years). These wonderful opportunities provided a rich experience for our family and instilled a desire to travel (perhaps it was always there). We have travelled quite a bit since retiring and intend to continue. To date we have visited various parts of the world: for example, Athens, Prague, Isle of Skye, along the Queensland Coast, Istanbul, Bucharest, Budapest, and Barcelona (it just so happens that all these visits resulted in an eBook!).Earlier we travelled to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, as well as Italy on two Insight Tours.ProfessionalI (Graham) started out as a Radio Technician before becoming a technical teacher, and technical teacher trainer. This foundation led to a very enjoyable career as an adviser, program/project tenderer and manager, and independent consultant in international development assistance.Katherine commenced her career as a primary school teacher before becoming an ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) teacher, Self-Access Centre manager, and IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) Centre manager.

Introduction
Impressions
Visiting Bucharest was different. It wasn't as developed as the other cities we visited on our trip (e.g. Istanbul, Budapest and Salzburg). This was apparent with the low level of tourism services. Maybe it was because we visited during early December, but we hadn't found this to be the case in those other cities. To be fair there were emerging signs of development: for example, the recently re-developed Metro is great to use; the renovated Old Town has character; the ongoing maintenance of the grand buildings and city parks was evident; and more renovated apartments were becoming available for tourists and foreign workers.
By taking some initiative and being prepared to walk and engage with the local people a pleasant appreciation of the charms, culture and architecture of Bucharest can be easily acquired over four days. In some ways Bucharest reminded us of our experiences of living and working for many years in developing countries within Asia and Africa – so we felt very comfortable.
We enjoyed using the Metro, walking about the city and its parks, visiting the National Village Museum and the Palace of the People, observing the significant monuments found in such places as Revolution Square, and engaging with the local shopkeepers to obtain our supplies.
Overview
In this eBook we discuss our experience of visiting Bucharest for four days during our overall trip from Istanbul to London.
We present a day-to-day account of our sightseeing activities; identify the key attractions; and provide our impressions, key facts, selected photos, relevant references, and key costs of these attractions.
Further information is provided in the Appendices: Appendix A provides a note from Katherine with her personal impressions of our visit and a selective history of Bucharest; Appendix B presents Katherine’s additional notes on the history of the National Village Museum; and Appendix C provides a consolidation of all the references used throughout the eBook.
Preparation
As we planned our trip from Istanbul to London we wondered about Bucharest. There seemed to be a paucity of normal travel information, certainly by well known travel writers. Our prior impressions were of a less developed country and city. As mentioned above, this did not daunt us as we had lived and worked in similar environments. It would just be a different holiday experience.
We planned to stay within the city confines of Bucharest and to "take it
