About this ebook

If dreams are the cousin of death, you should pay attention to your nightmares whenever they involve their relative--it might mean the difference between going to heaven or hell. BLASPHEMY.

As a child, Antonio Vaughn was taught to believe in God, but a hard life caused him to lose faith. In his adolescent years he lived as a common criminal disregarding the laws of the land and the Lord until he found himself lying on his deathbed. Remembering the stories about pearly gates and fiery pits, he knew exactly where he was going.

In a last minute attempt to save face, Antonio closed his eyes and prayed for forgiveness. When he woke up, life as he knew it was back to normal. What he didn't know was that every choice he made from that moment forward would determine his fate.

    CHAPTER I

    Friday:

Black male, mid-twenties, multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body.

    What are his vitals?

Very unstable, and if we are gonna save him we need to get him some serious medical attention now!

Antonio Vaughn, a.k.a. Tone was laying on a gurney and being ushered through an emergency room by a team of paramedics at Christ Memorial Hospital. What seemed like a million flourescent lights whizzed by him as the group of nurses and doctors urgently pushed him down a maze of hallways while strategically sticking various needles into his veins and cutting the clothes from his body. Blood poured from each of the several holes that were in his chest, and those holes were made by a hail of bullets; there was a thumping sensation behind his right ear, where a fragment of lead was lodged, causing him a painful headache; and he was having trouble breathing through the oxygen mask. Although he was successfully aware of his surroundings, Antonio was unable to speak and just laid there thinking about the events that lead up to his hospitalization.

It was a hot summer day on the southside of Chicago. A skinny seventeen year old boy named Catfish clutched a pair of dice, and holding them up to his ear he rapidly shook them while saying, Yeah baby, I'm taking all bets, put yo money where yo mouth is.

Antonio was driving down Wabash Avenue; he just passed the 107th street intersection and was on the way to 108th when he spotted a small group of men gathered on the sidewalk, huddled in a semi-circle. Quickly assessing the situation he saw that a crap game was in session and not one to pass up an opportunity to win some extra cash, Tone parked his car, got out, then joined the bunch of gamblers.

Whats yo point fool?, Tone questioned.

Catfish looked up and noticed that his older friend had come from out of nowhere and was trying to get involved in the game, and not wanting to take the man's money he warned, I ain't got no point yet, but stay outta this Tone. This ain't for us. You better bet with me, not against me, I'm telling you I'm hot right now! Catfish then glanced around at the other men while finishing his spiel, Come on, I shoot ten and I hit for ten, I need a fader not a friend!

Antonio dropped a twenty dollar bill to the ground then spat, I fade ten and bet you don't hit for ten mo' lil nigga.

Come on Tone... I can't bet you. That's like biting the hand that feeds me. NO BET!, responded Catfish while shaking the dice and taking wagers from the other men.

Adamant about getting in the game Antonio barked, MAN BET THAT SHIT AND STOP ACTING LIKE A BITCH!

At the time, Fish had four other bets going and Tone's twenty would put the boy's winnings at an even hundred dollars, if he rolled the right number. He really didn't want to take Antonio's money, but with one-hundred dollars riding on this roll, he couldn't resist. Bet then nigga, I tried to warn you, hissed Catfish, locking in the wager with Tone before finally letting the dice roll from his hand and across the concrete. One die landed immediately showing a five, and the other die spun for a second, then landed on a six causing Fish to scream, ELEVEN! Point seen, money gone. NEXT! He then scooped up the dice along with several bundles of crumpled money.

    "BET BACK, BET
