Chapter 1
Discovery
Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine….
With the words of that beautiful old hymn going through my mind." I was wheeled back into theatre for the second time in a week at McCords Hospital this time for a mastectomy.
The adventure had begun just the week before, when I had discovered a large breast lump the Saturday before Mother’s day the 9th May 2009. When I discovered it, I was shocked! One thing that I had always feared was breast cancer. At the time I thought Okay!
so maybe it’s just a benign mass, as I had a low risk for getting breast cancer. I decided to tell the family only on the evening of Mother’s Day as I didn’t want to ruin the day they had planed. When I told them, they were shocked with the news and obviously extremely distressed. I promised them that I would go to the doctor, first thing on the Monday morning. The Bible verse that came to mind was 1 Corinthians 2v9 which says No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived, what God has prepared, for those who love Him.
I prayed that night that God would give me peace for this situation that I found myself in. I slept so well. I went to work the next morning and saw the doctor at 11 am. He felt the lump and then referred me to McCords Hospital.
Darryl my dear husband and I arrived at the hospital at noon. Although I was anxious I also knew that God was in control and all I had to do was trust Him. I went through all the usual standard tests and after 1pm, I saw the doctor in the out patients department’s clinic. He took my medical history and then checked the lump. It was a large lump of about 8cm x 6cm. He made an appointment for the breast clinic for me for the following day.
Things were moving really fast. We called on friends and family immediately to pray for not only me, but for the family at this rather stressful time.
That afternoon I went to have a lie down, feeling a little tearful. I thought for a split second that Darryl had walked in and placed his hand on my shoulder, but no one was there. I immediately realised that it was the Lord, hearing the words, Be at peace my child
I woke up two hours later, feeling totally at peace and knowing that the Lord was in control of this situation. Tuesday afternoon had arrived. It was now the 12th May. Sitting with other woman waiting our turn to see the surgeons, we all seemed to be in various stages of anxiety. Soon it was my turn. I met the surgeon. He checked me out thoroughly and said I would need surgery as soon as possible. I would have the lump removed and all the glands under my arm as well. I booked the date for a week later. The procedure was explained; blood tests were done and the astronomical costs involved were discussed. We did not have the spare money, but I knew in some way that God would provide the finances for this rather urgent surgery. The rest of the week passed very quickly, I worked as
