The Gospel Revealed - Britt Prince
Introduction
The Gospel is the message of salvation. Therefore, it is the most important subject in scripture and deserves our most sincere approach. With over 2,300 sects in Christendom, teaching different views on salvation, it becomes difficult to find the truth on this most important subject. Sadly, we have had the New Testament for approximately 2,000 years and Christendom as a whole still gives an unclear answer to the question, What must I do to be saved?
Yet, our eternal destiny in heaven or hell depends on the correctness of the answer.
Three Major Theologies
There are only three major theologies about salvation being taught in the mainstream of Christendom. They are: Apostolic, Catholic, and Reformed.
Traditionally, all three have agreed that salvation is found by faith in Jesus Christ as the Savior and his shed blood on the cross as the propitiation for sin (John 8:24, 1John 4:10). The application of the blood of Jesus is where the differences of doctrinal interpretation are found among Christian faiths. It is understood that salvation comes to the individual when the blood is applied to their personal life. The question then becomes, How is the blood of Christ applied to the individual life?
or How are we saved by the blood of Christ?
Below is a brief definition of all three theologies. We will expand on each throughout the study and compare them to each other and with scripture.
Apostolic Theology teaches that we are saved by faith in Christ and obedience to the command to repent of our sins (Acts 17:30); obedience to the command of baptism in the name of Jesus for the remission of our sins; (Acts 10:33, 48) and obedience to the command to be baptized by the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking with tongues (Acts 1:4-5; John 20:22; Luke 24:49). The blood of Christ is applied at all four steps: faith, repentance, water baptism, baptism of the Holy Spirit. This completes our faith response to the gospel and also completes the new birth process.
Catholic Theology teaches that we are saved by faith and water baptism. Faith alone is not sufficient to bring justification. Unless it is accompanied by love and baptism, divine acceptance is not granted.
(Council of Trent, Sixth Session, Chapter VII) They further teach that a person becomes a member of the Catholic Church at baptism. The New Catholic Encyclopedia, page 996 says, The sacrament of baptism, by which a person becomes a member of the church, is necessary for salvation.
They further teach that People receive God’s Spirit at water baptism, after Christ’s example.
Reformed Theology teaches that we are saved at the moment we first believe and that we are filled with God’s Spirit at that same time. Furthermore, they teach that faith and repentance are inseparable experiences. Moreover, they teach that water baptism is symbolic and is only an outward sign of a profession of faith and has nothing to do with salvation.
The Gospel Revealed will analyze these three major theological positions relative to salvation and will reveal which is correct, according to the scriptures. As you complete this study, please, open your heart and mind so the true gospel can be revealed to you.
Lesson 1
What is the Gospel?
The term Gospel
is one of the most common words used among Christians today. Yet, most Christians, including preachers, have an elusive understanding of what the Gospel really is.
Some suggest that the Gospel is the knowledge that Jesus Christ was born, lived, and died. Others suggest that it is the first four books of the New Testament, called The Gospels
.
There is only one passage that declares the Gospel verbatim; let’s look at it.
1 Corinthians 15:1-4
1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
Simply put, the Gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The Application of the Gospel
If the Gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, then how do we apply this to our lives?
Let’s Look at Apostolic Theology First
Apostolic Theology teaches that we apply the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ through faith and obedience.
Faith
We must believe in God (Hebrews 11:6). We must believe that Jesus Christ is the Savior (John 8:24). We must also believe the Gospel (Romans 10:14, Mark 1:15).
Obedience
After we have believed the Gospel, we must also obey it (Romans 6:16-18; 16:26).
I Peter 4:17
For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?"
2 Thessalonians 1:7-8
7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
Hebrews 5:9
And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
In light of theses scriptures, do you believe that we must obey the gospel?
How Do We Obey?
If the Gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, how do we obey something He did?
We obey by following Jesus into his death, burial, and resurrection through repentance, water baptism, and receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
• Repentance is following Jesus into his death.
(Matthew 16:24)
• Water Baptism is following Jesus into his burial.
(Romans 6:4)
• Spirit Baptism is following Jesus into his resurrection. (Romans 6:5; 7:6; 8:2)
