Introduction
Cooking with the slow cooker is a hoot. You fill the crockery in the morning and when it’s dinnertime and you’re just getting home with tired feet and a full mind, feeling weather weary, facing an armload of paperwork, questioning kids needing time, a house needing care, and a hungry spouse, your house smells good and the food is done.
This book evolved out of the love for friends who are just as busy as I and whose time is just as valuable. They range from mothers busy with small children, schooling, volunteering, carpooling and puppeteering to the hardworking souls fighting the front lines of the business world. And I know there are many others out there (like yourself) whose lives are full and days seem to be speeding by. It takes so much time to think about, gather, prepare, serve and clean up food. (I didn’t mention eating because that part goes all too fast in comparison with the rest).
During the day I don’t enjoy the nagging question in the back of my head, What shall we have for dinner?
When I ask my family for suggestions, I always get: ‘What are my choices; I don’t care -an attitude that changes as soon as the food is placed before them; Steak and potatoes - I quit asking that budget minded child - or Whatever you like." So we usually end up with: ‘Whatever is on sale or a Barbie surprise.’ And the funny thing is, the latter usually take just as long to prepare, if not longer, than filling the crockery and making a salad. Plus, I save the time and energy not worrying about what to eat.
Crockery cooking helps you to get organized. It allows you to plan in advance and thereby take whatever you need out of the freezer the night before, make a shopping list, know when you’ll have leftovers for lunch or even plan an evening out. I began meal planning when I got pregnant with my fourth child. My life was full of food at the time. I would fill 5 pots at least once a day. There was recording and measuring (a new experience for me when creating), gathering recipes, passing out new ones to try, timing and taste testing. I had help testing from the people around me: my family, the
