    The worst, the absolute worst, was the smell.

    The cold was bad, cutting into his very bones like long sharp knives. The constant rain created the slimy mud that clung to his boots and weighed him down even more than his kit, that was bad. The rats, fat and clever, their beady eyes filled with a knowing look, their heads cocked to one side as if wondering how tasty, how tender he was going to be, they were bad.
