LUIS RAFAEL: Poeta, narrador y ensayista. Dirigió la revista literaria Jácara (1995-2005). Ha publicado una veintena de libros, entre los más recientes: Los hijos de Adán (cuento, 2002), Colómbico (poesía, 2003), Eliseo Diego: donde la demasiada luz (ensayo, 2004), Mulato (novela para jóvenes, 2006; Premio Nacional “La Rosa Blanca” de Mejor Texto para niños y jóvenes publicado en Cuba en 2007), El dueño de los caballitos (cuento, 2007), Cartas al hijo (poesía, 2008), Liz desea (novela, 2009), Cuentos y Leyendas del Caribe (relatos, Ed. Anaya, Madrid, 2010).Compiló y publicó diversas antologías de literatura hispanoamericana. Ha visitado una veintena de países e impartido cursos y conferencias sobre literatura en universidades y centros culturales de Cuba y el extranjero. Se desempeñó como jurado de disímiles concursos literarios internacionales. Ha participado en varias ferias del libro y festivales internacionales de poesía. Sus textos han sido publicados en revistas y periódicos de Cuba, México, Uruguay, Venezuela, Paraguay, Colombia, Argentina, España, Holanda, EE.UU., Inglaterra, Grecia, Portugal, Italia, Alemania, Brasil, Rusia, Francia, Siria, Irak, Egipto y China. Poemas, artículos y otras obras suyas han sido traducidos al inglés, al francés, al holandés, al ruso, al portugués, al alemán, al griego, al italiano, al chino, al armenio, al árabe.Es Doctor en Filología Hispanoamericana por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid; Máster en Didáctica; y Máster en Estudios Literarios. Es Profesor Adjunto de la Facultad de Artes y Letras de la Universidad de La Habana y profesor colaborador de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Además del Premio de la Crítica Literaria “La Rosa Blanca” 2007, obtuvo en 1990 el Premio Nacional de Cuento y en 1996 el Premio Nacional de Ensayo “Eliseo Diego”.Fundó las editoriales Cuba Literaria y Ediciones CUBARTE. Es Miembro de la Asociación Internacional de Hispanistas (AIH), de la Association pour le Développement des Études Hispaniques y de la Asociación de Estudios Latinoamericanos (LASA), Vicepresidente de la Asociación Cultural “Palabras Libres” y miembro del Comité Editorial de la revista bilingüe español-inglés Hipertexto, del Departamento de Lenguas y Literatura Modernas de la Universidad de Texas-Pan American.Escribió programas dramatizados y culturales para la radio y la televisión de Cuba. Colabora con diversos medios de prensa y como editor literario, y ejerce la docencia en institutos de formación literaria de Madrid como Fuentetaja y Hotel Kafka. Desde su mismo título, esta colección de relatos propone un universo habitado por una representación humana plural, pues todos somos hijos del primer hombre. Quizás esto explique la variedad de personajes que aparecen y justifique el hecho de que compartan las páginas de un mismo libro.
Diversos son también los temas que recogen estos cuentos, desde conflictos familiares, confrontaciones entre el ser individual y las exigencias sociales, hasta obsesiones metafísicas. Se trata a veces de la evocación de la infancia donde se une lo poético y lo grotesco, o se refiere a las circunstancias de elegir un camino o simplemente defender el derecho a elegir el propio camino. Todos ellos sintetizan inquietudes del autor en el orden íntimo, social y estético.
Estas narraciones no son ajenas a los experimentos y significados propios de la actual cuentística cubana. En ellas encontramos el sentido apocalíptico y lúdico, las indagaciones filosóficas y socioestéticas, el estilo fragmentado, la intención transgenérica, la mezcla de lo histórico, apócrifo, mítico, artístico, veraz... Son los nuevos códigos que desde hace casi veinte años vienen subvirtiendo el canon, desafiando al lector en un ejercicio de asimilación esforzado, siempre activo, y a veces truculento.
Pero Los hijos de Adán, aún cuando se ubique en el contexto de esta narrativa, expresa una forma muy personal de concebir el género. Luis Rafael nos ha dicho que el cuento para él es similar a un «arco argumental atemporado con un extremo al sol y otro en sombras, cuya piedra de toque es el párrafo último». Luego explica:
No me interesa la forma en que el viento impulsó la ola porque sé diversa esa posibilidad, infinita en la espuma, me importa el choque de la ola contra los arrecifes o la blanda arena. Esta es la esencia del cuento moderno: el conflicto y no la motivación del conflicto. El lector podrá imaginar de qué árbol se fugó la hoja, porque habita el bosque y él mismo cae y ha caído cual hoja. El pétalo del follaje que son los protagonistas y sus conflictos, expresión individual de problemáticas colectivas y atemporales o acontextuales, es lo que interesa; y su dibujo, detallado o insinuado, la base sobre la cual se sitúa el cuento, como resumen de fervores y síntesis del universo.
