About this ebook

Evangeline has spent her teenage years in obscurity. Her foster parents have the emotional aptitude of robots and her classmates barely acknowledge her existence. About to turn eighteen and feeling like a social pariah, she is desperate to connect with someone. Anyone.

When Evangeline meets Sofie after literally stumbling upon her café, she believes she’s found that connection. Willing to do anything to keep it, she accepts a job as Sofie’s assistant and drops everything to fly to Manhattan, where she is thrust into a luxurious world of Prada, diamonds, and limitless cash.

With such generosity and kindness, it’s easy for Evangeline to dismiss certain oddities . . . like Sofie’s erratic and sometimes violent behavior, and the monstrous guard dogs. She’s even willing to dismiss her vivid dreams of mob-style murders, beautiful homeless people living in caves, and white-eyed demons that haunt her each night as figments of her imagination—especially when one of those figments is the gorgeous Caden. When she wakes up with bite marks on her neck, the fairy tale quickly turns into a nightmare. She slowly unravels the mystery surrounding Sofie and friends, and the reality of the bites and the “dreams.” What she discovers is far more mysterious and terrible than anything she could have imagined.

In a world where everyone has motive to lie for personal gain, Evangeline must decide which deception is least likely to get her killed.

I couldn't predict, not on the slightest, what would happen next. There were so many twists and turns that really kept the story going. The storyline was by far the best thing about this book. I was completely hooked.

Another thing I loved was Sofie's character. It was complex but wonderful.

In my opinion, the only thing wrong with this book is that sometimes the writing can seem a little childish. The writing isn't terrible I guess I'm just used to a different style of writing. I could see in some parts the writing was more mature than in others but overall it was this that let the book go. Also if there were more backstories, you could've felt with all of the characters more. The only character you got to know was Sofie and a little about Evangeline. Hopefully you learn more in the sequels.

Overall I give it 3.5/5 stars! I am jumping into Asylum straight away though!! Can not wait to see what happens next.

Didn't hate it but I just couldn't get into it. It's written well enough but I was bored a quarter way in because nothing has happened except a lot of high-end shopping, two of what the main character thinks are very vivid dreams (where some slightly interesting events take place) & she has a definite crush on dream guy Caden. I don't understand all the reviews saying it's an exciting pace from the first page because it really & truly is not.

I wanted to be swept up in Evangeline's awe of circumstance but I just wasn't engaged. I think the reveals are simply too long in coming & I kind of stopped caring about getting to the point. Maybe I'll come back to finish this some other time.

I've come across so many different concepts within the vampire sub-genre that I'm always surprised to see something new that can still grab my attention. The vampire concept was different and was actually interesting. There was the usual "good" vampire, that's an understatement, these vampires were deceptively good. I was instantly wary about the intentions of these vampires when it came to Evangeline's trusting nature. Of course at first she didn't know there were vampires.

This vampire story as the usual, bad and good vampires, witches, and the unwitting human. But there were the surprising elements of vampire were-beasts (new to me at least), surprising twists, secrets and some dimension travel. And that was where this story took on a different feel and made it that more intriguing and inventive.

This was a free book and oh. my. god. I loved it!

"I know; it's hard not to like me," Amelie said, throwing her arm around my shoulder. "I'm extremely charming."

I fell in love with the characters, especially the Ratheus bunch, excluding Rachel, Sofie, Leo, and Max. The above par writing was an added bonus. There were a few mishaps (doddle instead of dawdle being a very noticeable one in the first or second chapter) but nothing that took away from the story.

    More to come...

Anathema by K.A. Tucker was such an amazing read that I literally had trouble putting this book down and when I did, at the end, I kept thinking about it. The characters were lodged firmly in my mind and I had a billion questions about how everything was going to turn out down the road - you know, in the next book! The first thing that struck me about this book, aside from the perfect amount of detail, was the character of Evangeline. She seemed so lost in her own lonely world that you immediately wonder how she came to be that way. While Evangeline is this lost, lonely girl in the beginning, the book follows her in first person perspective through the many ordeals she has to face and the discoveries she makes. Evangeline, while no longer alone, still remains lonely through most of the book. She is always the outsider, the human thrown in amongst vampires and other things. While Anathema is a vampire story, it is markedly different from others that have inundated the market. There are new creatures in this book as well as a new look at how vampires and witches have unintentionally affected the world they inhabit. The characters are also super fun to read! Anathema was a pleasant surprise for me. I expected to like it based on the description and the genre, but I didn't expect to fall in love with it or the characters that inhabited it. Evangeline, Sophie, Caden, and a few others are still dancing around in my head as I wait patiently to have those questions of, "what happens next," answered. If you love YA books, fantasy novels, and vampires you really need to grab this book. Be sure to tuck yourself away somewhere quiet and comfortable because you won't be getting up until you hit the end!

What if you had nothing and no one? No roots to hold you to your life. What if you had the opportunity of a lifetime? The most luxurious aspects of life become yours for the taking. What price would you pay? Evangeline is a girl with no family, no ties to her life. When the glamorous Sofie mysteriously insinuates herself into Evangeline’s life, her life changes in ways she could never possibly imagine. Upon arriving in New York, Sofie introduces Evangeline to Viggo and Mortimer. The fact that the three are hiding something from Evangeline quickly becomes apparent. But who can worry about that when wads of cash and loads of clothes are heaved upon you at every turn? Things take a bizarre turn on her first night in New York. A terrifying “dream” has Evangeline meeting strangely beautiful and dangerous people, coming under attack, and waking up with a bump on her head. Night after night, she becomes more involved in the “dream world” and day after day, she is faced with increasingly troubling behavior from Sofie, Viggo and Mortimer. With deceptions coming at every angle, Evangeline is left choosing who she can trust. The wrong choice may certainly cost her life.In Anathema, K.A. Tucker has created a fascinating world filled with rich characters, alternate realities and psychological drama. Although Evangeline is the main character, Sofie was, for me, the most interesting character. Sofie was by turns ruthless, deceptive and surprisingly caring. Evangeline started the story as a meek character, but developed the strength to handle her circumstances. To be completely honest, the jumping between Evangeline’s dream world and daily life was a little confusing and left me hoping that there would be a great explanation. Every time she was thrown from one reality to the other, I was thrown off track. Both storylines were excellent, but they felt distinct, not fully cohesive. The dual storylines are explained about halfway through the book, and eventually come together very nicely. My favorite aspect of Anathema was the deception between the characters. While reading this book, you can never take anyone at “face value”. Each time I felt I knew who Evangeline could trust, the tables were turned. The level of deceit and trickery is astounding. I changed allegiance continuously and by the time I finished reading the book, I was still not sure I, or Evangeline, made the right choice. K.A. Tucker beautifully set the stage for the sequel, Asylum, due out in 2012.

I think I just got my first taste of paranormal, dystopian, urban fantasy, action, mystery, suspense fused all in one epic book!I’ve always wondered what would happen if vampires couldn’t control their hunger...and Tucker created just that. Anathema is VERY original. I haven’t read anything like it. There was a lot of dystopian elements and fuse that in with paranormal, vampires, and sorcerers...I know awesome is kind of an over exaggerated word but it really was awesome!Tucker doesn't stray far away from how vampires are...they’re beautiful and deceiving...Talk about creating characters you love to hate but can’t seem to hate lol ahem Viggo and Mortimer. I didn’t know if I could trust Sophie either at the beginning but she was genuinely in a “prickle” and really cared about Evangeline’s wellbeing. Even Sophie told Evangeline she was too trusting, I have to agree. That’s what makes her human, she’s vulnerable and naive. Evangeline did prove herself, I mean she has some serious back bone. Not that I’m saying she can take on two lovesick strong vampires, but in the end I didn’t expect the whole twist of events to happen the way they did.As for Caden, Amelie, Fiona, Bishop and Max i LOVED them. They all had their own personalities, they just shined. Caden is so HOT lol I wonder if Tucker will write a story from Caden’s POV. He is such an interesting character...I want to know him, his story, from being human to turning into a vamp.I’m so so anxious to read book 2! A Definite MUST READ!! Anathema is one of my new faves of 2011.

Can I just say I totally dug this book?! Umm, I totally did. This is not just your teenager daughter’s YA novel. It is dark, clever & suspenseful, oh my.We meet orphaned loner Evangeline right as she is stumbling (literally, the girl is a hot mess) into her plum new job as an assistant for the sophisticated and mysterious Sophie. Major new perks of her new job include a move to New York, unlimited Prada, Burberry, cash and perhaps having a pseudo home to call her own. She should have read the fine print of her benefits package though because it also seems to include just about everyone wanting to either a) kill her or b) use her for their nefarious evil master plans without giving her a courteous little heads up. Rude! The poor girl really should sleep with one eye open but that is pretty hard to do when she is having the most vivid dreams that make her wonder what is reality and what is illusion?! I really enjoyed this book. Between the world building being incredible, seamless transitions between the two, danger around every corner and the sweet little romance she was starting up with the hottie Caden…I didn't know if I wanted that girl to go sleep or if I wanted her to wake up. The story has an epic feel to it while still having a young adult vibe. Almost a Gossip Girl meets Hunger Games. I’m looking forward to the sequel. ~ Reviewed for LT Member Giveaway

Hmm, what to say about this book. As paranormal romances go, it wasn't bad. However, I always have a problem with these stories. There must be a template somewhere that the writers of these books follow. Innocent young girl falls for dangerous {fill in supernatural being of your choice}. She has a tragic past and doesnt realize how beautiful she is because, of course, that would make her less attractive; he's beyond gorgeous. They fall in love at first glance but he warns her he's dangerous. She doesn't believe him because he's so goodlooking and we all know that good looking men are always, well, good (just ask Ted Bundy). To prove her point, she risks not only her life but the lives of everyone else around. Anyway, about this book. The characters were likable enough for the most part. The story is told in the first voice by Evangeline who, as heroines go, is extremely passive. Things happen to her, people threaten or protect her. She rarely acts in any rational or even discernible way. Caden, her love interest is a vampire. (just an aside, great name but how come vampires in these books never have names like Bruce or Todd. They all have these romantic names as if, when they were born, their mothers just knew they were gonna grow up to be vampires. Or do they take these names after they were turned to make themselves seem more romantic). But I digress. So back to the characters - some of them were actually quite intriguing e.g. Sophie, Leo. and Max, the werebeast, all of whom I rather liked. Maybe I'm too old or too cynical for these books because I just don't get the whole fascination with bad boys. Clearly, young girls love them and, if they get people reading, great but, just once, couldn't we have a less than beautiful non-auburn-haired heroine not fall hopelessly in love with the hunk with the jade coloured eyes but actually kick some serious butt on her own. Again, never mind, just another diversion on the road to my conclusion. So you're probably wondering, if I disliked it this much, why 3 stars? Well, I liked the ending - because the author took a chance and broke the cookie cutter pattern in surprising ways in the last few pages. So much so, in fact, I found myself thinking Maybe I might check out the sequel. And, trust me, no one was more surprised than me at that thought.

This was a enjoyable read & kept me up late a few nights until my eyelids were too heavy to open! There were enough plot twists to keep me guessing, enough vampire intrigue to keep my coming back for more, and a nice wrap up of the story to keep me happy and waiting for the next book in this series! I'm looking forward to see the characters develop as the series unfolds. Great book!

We first meet our heroine, Evangeline, on the eve of her eighteenth birthday. A social outcast with a tragic past, she has spent her teenage years shifted between foster families. That evening she meets Sofie, a glamorous and mysterious cafe owner. Sofie gives Evangeline a job and promptly whisks her off to New York and a life of luxury.Evangeline quickly realises that all is not what it seems from the opulence of her surroundings to the giant guard dogs sent to protect her. Each night when she sleeps, she is transported to another world of beautiful young vampires who need her help to escape their world and she develops a mutual infatuation with the lovely Caden. Evangeline is being used by both Sofie and her new vampire friends for their own needs. Her life is in danger and she needs to work out who, if anyone, to trust. The book did have some weaknesses for me. First, I didn't quite believe in Evangeline as a heroine. I liked her at first as she is very realistic and unassuming but, as the novel progressed, she didn't really have to do much. Her moments of danger were often solved by someone else's magic and her relationship with Caden was a classic case of teenage infatuation. I wished she had a bit more backbone and didn't fall for him so easily. This novel is an ok read and is an imaginative take on the popular vampire theme. The plot runs smoothly and I finished the book wanting to know what happens next. I think it would appeal to fans of this genre but it wasn't really for me.

If a reader is looking for exciting dialogue and constant action, then this is the book for him/her! Evangeline begins the novel as a typical girl yearning for typical things in life; she progresses drastically after meeting Sofie. She begins to dream of events that are sort of...crazy and slightly off. However, she meets Caden, who quickly draws her into this dream world; she becomes obsessed with the dream world. The best quality of this novel was the main character. Evangeline was distrusting when she should be-the reader need not yell at this character to think harder; she was calm and in control the majority of the novel. She seemed to have a level head on her shoulders. The plot of this novel is fantastic, although the plot is not entirely unique-the reader will enjoy it very much. The author is very skilled at pulling readers into the novel, the dialogue really keeps the book lively and a page-turner. This book is recommended for young adults who enjoy stories containing adventure. 4 stars

I don't even know where to begin with this book. The storyline was so unique and very creative that this book is devouring! By the end of the first chapter, I was not hooked, but so engrosslly enthralled that I could not, would not, put this book down. What got me hooked about this book was the unique storyline. Yes, it has vampires in it, but there is so much more to the story. The history of the book laid out a very chaotic future, with great description. I adored the storyline and the way it flowed. It didn't confuse you or leave you hanging. Instead, if filled you with such great excitment in reading the book. As the reader, you fell into this amazing world that Ms. Tucker created and you don't want to leave. The characters were very well develop. I love reading a book, where you see the main characters come into who they are meant to be. All of them play such an important role, not only in the past, but in the future as well. Secrets were revealed, betrayals were made...and anathema was created. I love that the title of this book, describe the whole story all together. It is a curse that not only harmed the past, present, and future, it caused such hatered between people that it dripped off the pages of the book. AMAZING!The love interest in this book also got me hooked. I like how this love was not created right away but dismissed. You knew they were meant to be, just to many other factors keep them apart. I know this may seem maschoist of me, but I like that they struggled in their relationship. I can only hope that it will make them stronger.I strongly recommend that you read this book. It will give you one heck of a reading adventure. It will most definitely cause you anathema. It will curse you to read it till the very last page.

Evangeline has lived in foster homes since the death of her mother and has to an extent felt alienated and alone ever since. On the eve of her 18th birthday she meets Sofie and is thrown into two different worlds and discovers she may not have been as alone as she thought she was. Sofie takes Evangeline to Manhattan to stay with "friends" and from there things begin to become strange. From oversized super protective dogs to an odd dream Evangeline quickly realizes things are not as they seem. Anathema is a book of two world of vampires each struggling with a different conflict in their specific vampire world. Evangeline will be entangled in both and maybe each worlds only hope. I really enjoyed Anathema and am eagerly awaiting the next installment to see when Tucker will take this story.

I like how the synopsis tells you exactly what the book is about without giving away any major plot points, so I'm not going to go too in depth about the story line. We meet Evangeline who's about to turn 18 but has no friends or family to speak of. No one seems to want to get to close to her, even her foster parents are distant. So when she happens upon a young woman, Sofie, who invites her to New York to be her assistant, she jumps at the chance. Everything feels like a dream at first; she's subjected to only the best clothes and living quarters, and has tons of money thrust upon her by her two hosts, Viggo and Mortimer. Then at night she's transported to a strange other world that resembles earth, but the people living there are certainly different. It's there that she meets Caden, who she feels an instant connection with. She's pulled back and forth between these two worlds, at first believing that they are merely vivid dreams and then realizing that something much stranger is going on. As she learns more about this alternate universe and the people she thought were her friends, she begins to wonder who exactly she can trust. For some reason I find it harder to write reviews on books that I truly loved. I'm not sure why, I guess it's because my mind gets pulled in so many different directions, remembering all of the incredible scenes in the book and wanting to share them, but not wanting to spoil the story for anyone else. The characters in this book? Amazing! I loved Evangeline as the main character. She was tough, smart, and persevered even when everything seemed impossible. I felt compassion for her having lost her mother at a young age and not having anyone in her life to confide in. She is extremely likable and relatable, which makes this an easy book to get sucked into. The secondary characters were just as important to the story. We Sofie who takes Evangeline under her wing without really knowing her and whisks her off to New York. Then there's the mysterious Viggo and Mortimer who welcome Evangeline into their home but are harboring some very dark secrets. I really loved Evangeline's guard dog, Max. At first he seemed just like an ordinary dog (albeit a very intimidating, large dog), but as the story progresses he plays a bigger part and we learn more about him. Then there are the characters from the other world; Amelie, Fiona, Bishop, Rachel, and of course Caden. I loved all of them, except Rachel who isn't meant to be liked because she's got her sights set on Caden and for the most part he seems to reciprocate some of those feelings much to Evangeline's dismay. I won't go into any more detail with the characters, but I found it impossible not to connect with each and every one of them. The romance between Caden and Evangeline felt very genuine and makes you want nothing more than the two of them to be together. The wrench thrown into the mix of course is Rachel, who thinks that he only has eyes for her. There are some very tender moments between Evangeline and Caden that make you just want to melt, but terrify you at the same time wondering what will happen at the end, if they will ever be able to truly be a couple. Another thing I loved about this book is the unique story line. It has two different worlds; one is set in present day New York, the other is a sort of dystopian society where everything is in ruin. The author did an excellent job of painting this other world for us so it's very easy to visualize and imagine what it would look like. The story was just a breath of fresh air after reading so many books with practically the same premise and I enjoyed every bit of it. There is a pretty big cliffhanger at the end and I know some people are turned off by that. To me, cliffhangers just serve to get me more excited about the next book in the series so they don't bother me in the least. What more can I say? This book rocked and I would go so far as to say it's one of my top 3 books of this year so far; it was that good! I can't wait to see what else the author has in store for these characters in the next installment in the series and I will most definitely be pre-ordering it when it becomes available. Go check out Anathema now, I promise you won't be disappointed!

Yay! I was given the opportunity to review another fabulous book! And guess what? It is a Vampire romance!K. A. Tucker has created both a fantastic Urban Fantasy world (set in New York) AND a completely separate Dystopia Fantasy world! Can it get any better than that? The Urban Fantasy world Tucker created mirrors the earth in a lot of ways, but the other, Dystopia world has been completely taken over by Vampires and humans have been extinct for 700 years, AND their world has gone downhill ever since.Evangeline is the main character in the book and I just adore her! She trusts easily and gives everyone the benefit of the doubt. If a person (or vampire LoL) breaks Evangeline’s trust or shows signs they should not be trusted, it takes actions not words to gain her trust back. I noticed this in her character right away because that is exactly how I am and this is exactly what I would look for in a friend! And, throughout the book I was in conflict with who Evangeline should trust, right along with her!Evangeline was orphaned when her mother was killed in a car accident. Throughout her whole life she’s had a hard time getting close to anyone other than her mother, and then she loses her. In the beginning of the book, she is about to turn 18 and she is offered an amazing job making a lot of money that requires her to travel with this wealthy lady to New York! But after she gets to New York, weird things start to happen to her. When she goes to sleep, she vividly dreams that she is actually waking up in strange places and meeting strange people. Her dreams are so vivid that, at the end of the night when she wakes up in her own bed, she can’t believe they were only dreams. What’s happening to her? And, why is this happening? Is there a reason? Who are these strange people she sees when she goes to bed? Is she living in the real (LoL) Urban Fantasy world . . . or living in the separate Dystopia Fantasy world! You will have to read and find out!The romance in this book gave me butterflies and tingles! My stomach actually did flips a couple times. What I’m getting at here is that I am, once again, in love with a fictional character! Ooo! La! La!K.A. Tucker included plenty of unexpected twists and turns in this story, and she has written an amazing, phenomenal, and, at the same time, heart-wrenching cliff hanger of an ending!I LOVED it! I am really looking forward to K.A. Tucker’s next book!
