This book caught my attention right away as I began to read it. I had to make myself put it down. I love that the author breaks down the meaning of the words she used. Awesome book. Couldn't wait till the next book.

It's not exactly what I expected it would be. It does retain some of the elements common in the genre it belongs to, but it made it work effectively enough to make it not as cringey as the premise would have you think. There are a lot of rolling-my-eyes-so-hard-at-this moments, and I resorted to reading a different book every once in a while to "cleanse my palette", in a manner of speaking, as I was reading through this. The urban fantasy aspects far outweigh the erotic romance segments, which is what made me like this book more than I would have if the romance outbalanced it. I don't like Elizabeth, nor Wrath that much, though. Their moments together, and with the other members of the brotherhood, are either sappy or disturbing for me. They don't have that concrete of a personality for me to care about them too much. I couldn't even feel the tension and suspense in the moments where their emotions were severely heightened by the dangers they were facing. My main qualm about this novel though, that made me not love it-- aside from the main pair and my issue with the cringeworthy spellings of the names of some of the characters, the members of the brotherhood, mostly-- is the fumbling feel in the writing style and the plot. It very much feels like the author isn't quite certain whether to include either the erotic romance or the urban fantasy factors. Or where exactly to lead the plot. It's too shifty, the focus not staying on one certain aspect as there's too much to focus on, to set the stage, primarily. It's probably the misgivings of whether the readers will enjoy those or not. I think/hope that'll get sorted out in the succeeding books in the series.

Loved this. My only complaint is the rather wanky names given to all the vampires (except Darius - that's good). Can't wait to read the next one, but I have a few others lined up first. So many books, so little time....

Wow. I was really surprised with the story between Wrath and Beth as well as the closeness of the "brotherhood." I don't read para normal or sci fi, because it is easier, for me, just to read contemporary. This was contemporary, romantic, sexy, and hot. The writing is flawless.

Will I continue to read more para normal and sci fi... Maybe... Probably... I know that i will continue reading the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I half way though #2... Lover Eternal

A fun read, though I don't know at this point if I'll want to read the whole series. Lots of people say that the series gets better as it goes on, so I'm starting book 2.

For my #4 challenge (Color Word in Title), I read Dark Lover by J.R. Ward. This is the first novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series, so I read it for my #4 challenge. This is the story of Wrath - the last purebred vampire left on earth and King of his people. He is the essentially blind leader of a band of six lethal warriors known as the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Together, these warriors hunt the Lessening Society - the soulless vampire slayers who murdered Wrath's parents centuries ago.Wrath is stunned when a fellow warrior - Darius - asks him to protect and guide Darius' halfbreed daughter - a supposed orphan - into a heritage of which she has no knowledge. Beth Randall has been suffering inexplicable chills and hunger pangs that she cannot satisfy. She also can not deny the instant attraction she feels for Wrath when she meets him. Now, as Beth nears the precipice of her change the only one who can help her is Wrath. I loved this paranormal romance debut from a terrific author and will be looking for more books from this series. I give it an A+!

Dark Lover is the first book in the ‘Black Dagger Brotherhood’ paranormal romance series set in present day Caldwell, New York. The Brotherhood is an ancient order of warrior vampires who fight to defend their race against the evil Omega’s vampire slayers, know as lesser’s. There are now only six warriors left alive in the Brotherhood and they are all that stands between the civilian vampire population and extinction by the legions of slayers hunting them down. These vampires are a separate species to humans. In order to become a vampire in this world you have to have been born carrying vampire blood. Young adults undergo a dangerous transition at around twenty-five years of age to become a full vampire and many don’t survive. This, along with a high infant mortality rate, has seen their numbers dwindle. Vampires can drink the blood of humans but it has little nutritional value and they need to drink the blood of other vampires (of the opposite sex) to survive. The main characters of this book are Wrath, the only pure blooded vampire left on the planet who refuses to take up his mantle as king of the vampire race, and Beth who is living as a human and doesn’t realise she is a half-breed about to undergo her transition. Beth’s father, the warrior Darius, has just been murdered, but before he died he asked Wrath to take care of her through her transition. Without Wrath’s blood Beth will die. Welcome to the world of rap music, fast cars, black leather, knives, guns, an original and well thought out plot, attractive and sympathetic characters and orgasmically satisfying sex scenes. This is still my favourite book in the series after more than one reading!

Ok, my rating would be 3.5, but I was depressed and my cold was killing me, so I had to add that half star.I've had this book on my pc for, like, ever, and I have no idea why I didn't start it sooner.I love Wrath and I love the fact that he is blind. It's nice that a big badass like him has a weakness like that. If you don't count Beth, that is.Just one thing: how long did it take for the two of them to marry? Like, two f****** days? I mean, seriously???

Dark Lover is the first in Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. The brotherhood in question is a brotherhood of vampire warriors—but these vampires are not out for human blood. They are not out to turn humans into vampires. In fact, they couldn’t care less about the human population at all. Ward’s vampires are a different race; the vampire gene is hereditary, manifesting in children of vampires when they become adults, instead of being passed to humans through shared blood. Vampires can survive by drinking human blood, but the blood of another of their kind works much better to sustain them. Humans and vampires are sexually compatible, however, and can create half-vampire, half-human children.Beth Randall is one such half-breed. She has no idea of her father’s heritage, and so is unprepared for the transition that awaits when the vampire blood within her asserts itself. Wrath, the leader of the Black Dagger Brotherhood honors Beth’s father’s request to help Beth through the transition, but he does it reluctantly. He doesn’t plan to fall in love with her.The premise of the vampire nature is the reason I picked up this book, and the main thing that kept me going through it. It is well written and fast paced, with the sex and romance scenes adding to the plot instead of being thrown in randomly. The aspect of the novel that stood in the way of my enjoyment of it was the language: Ward’s characters are often tough, harsh guys, and their speech reflects that. It took me at least a quarter of the book to agree that many of the characters warranted such strong language. However, Ward does a good job of keeping swear words to the characters who would logically use them.Another thing that made me pause was the way the vampires were named. A handful had relatively normal names, but the warriors had names like “Rhageâ€? and “Vishousâ€?. Like the language, these took some getting used to.At the beginning of the novel is a small dictionary of vampire terms. I always enjoy reading the author’s intended meaning of created languages, but putting it at the beginning annoyed me a little. I prefer the reference material at the end of the book, where I can look for it when I want it without it jumping out at me before I even get hooked in the story.Dark Lover is a good book, but not for those who dislike sex or swear words. It is plot-driven, but definitely sex oriented. I would rate it for mature audiences for either the sex or the language. There is violence present, but it is not nearly as graphic or prevalent as I would have expected. Those who want to find out more about the series, or to watch the brothers rag on each other, should visit the author's site (jrward.com) or message board (jrward.com/forum/index.php). It's quite amusing, and a good way to get a Brotherhood fix between books.

Really good book. I'm actually a little annoyed at the title, because it makes it sound like it's a romance novel. I guess it is, sort of, but I was reading it more for the vampire angle than the romance part. Ah, well. Still a good read, and I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.

This was a great start to what I think will be a fantastic series. I love how dynamic all of the characters are, even the smaller ones. I love the spin on the vampire/hunter relationship...how the hunters are the ones who have no souls and are "undead." I'm looking forward to learning more about the other brothers, and seeing how Wrath changes now that he's made some decisions about his life. I'm also surprisingly looking forward to how Butch continues to play a role in the series.

This book has been in my to-read list for forever and now that I finally got to read it I wasn't disappointed. I only regret that I didn't read it sooner. Also those warriors are hot as hell. The only minus parts were Mr. X's POV which I hated. He is just so disgusting somehow but I lived when I read more about Beth and Wrath and now I can't wait to read the other books.

One of my favorite BookTubers raves about this series. I had a free gift card and decided to give it a go. I was not really sure if it was going to be my thing or have too many sexual scenes, but I decided to try it anyway. This started off really strong. It did take me a minute to sort through all of the characters. There are a ton introduced pretty quickly, and you get different aspects from several of them right after another. One thing I really enjoyed was hearing bits and pieces around their pasts. It was not really in detail, but the little information started to develop them individually. I can see why people love this series, as I really liked all of the characters and would like to read more about each. I was not a huge fan of how Beth and Wraith meet. I was annoyed what happens when he breaks into her house. However; I ended up enjoying their relationship as the story continued. This story had lots of romance and action all in one. I never lost my interest and it was really fast read. Overall, I enjoyed this. Some things I really liked and others I could have gone without. I am not sure if I will or will not continue on with the series at this point, but would definitely pick them up if I found them for a bargain.

This review first appeared on A Weebish Book Blog.I’ve been on a re-reading old favorites like crazy this year, especially since I’m determined to catch up on my series, such as the Black Dagger Brotherhood. I’d just finished Nora Roberts newest release and wanted to lose myself in a familiar, well missed world so I checked out DARK LOVER at the public library. Unsurprisingly, it spawned a BDB binge read that I can’t say I’m unhappy about. When Darius, close friend, fellow BDB member, and the only other member with a correctly spelled name is murdered, leaving his half-breed daughter clueless about her lineage, Wrath is forced to usher her into the world of vampires or leave her to die a pain-filled death at the tender age of twenty-five."As far as he was concerned, there were only two good positions for a human. A female on her back. And a male facedown and not breathing."Meet our tortured hero:Wrath is King of the dwindling vampire species, leader of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, and strongly believes he’s unqualified for both titles. He’s an almost completely blind, bitter, leather-encased terror whose self-hatred almost rivals Zsadists. He’s also a major asshole… until he stalks meets Beth."“You are beautiful,” he whispered. His subtle accent made him roll the R over his tongue, almost as if he were purring.Well that stands to reason, she thought. When he touched her, she felt beautiful."Meet our Mary Sue:Beth is our idealized heroine. Her life as a beat reporter at her small Caldwell newspaper is going nowhere, she has few friends, and zero prospective partners. She stunningly beautiful and the men in her life worship her but she’s got eyes for no one… until she meets Wrath.*cue eye roll*Yeah, the tortured hero and the Mary Sue are a dime a dozen in the romance world. And yet, I gave them four stars. Why? It’s hard not to love them. I certainly did. Beth is a strong, take-no-shit heroine and the perfect mate for a vampire like Wrath. She buffs out all his edges in the hottest ways possible. Despite my complaints, they made an excellent beginning for the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. But my favorite character? Fritz. The butler. He’s so adorable and happy to serve. I want a Fritz.All-in-all, I enjoyed the hell out of DARK LOVER and that’s really all that matters in my book. It made a wonderful reintroduction into the world of the BDB. If you’re a paranormal romance junkie who likes their characters fanged and haven’t read this series yet, where have you been?!

This is the first book I have read by J. R. Ward. Wow! What a great introduction to an author that is new to me and what a way to start a new series. The book is a story of Wrath, one of the unique vampire brothers, in the Black Dagger Brotherhood. The Brotherhood is the protectors of the dwindling race of vampires. They fight against those that would see the race destroyed. Each book focuses on the individual story of a member of the Brotherhood.Lots of people have written a synopsis; therefore, I will not bother. I’ll just say, I don’t think you will be disappointed. Even though I am only one book in, this is one of the best vampire series I have read. I can’t read to read the next one.

I got about halfway through this exciting book only to remember i have read it once before. It is an interesting read, especially for me, because it is not very often where one of the main characters is near blind and a vampire. Overall I thought this book was a fun read and can't wait to read the next book. If you're interested in vampires, changes, and stubborn fools then this book is for you.

Dark Lover is PNR as it should be. The romance smoulders, but the sex doesn't cross into pornographic or blot out the plot with its frequency. There is enough to keep you titillated, but not enough to make you loose interest if you are the type who likes a little more story.

I have to admit hulking, leather clad alpha males aren't my ideal idea of sexy, but they work here. These men are rough around the edges, but have just enough vulnerabilities (not that they would acknowledge them) to make the reader feel for them along with the female lead, Beth. The book does have some of the more annoying PNR qualities, instant unexplained attraction, the leader who has been so respected that he falls in love with the first woman to speak bluntly to him, etc. But these are genre norms, not true complaints about the book.

I have the second in series sitting on my bed-side table and can't wait to start it. Ward is a definite go-to for PNR fans everywhere.

I swear, one of the worst things about this series is the names. Couldn't you have give your men (your vampires even) a better naming convention than Rhage? Tohrment? Wrath? Zsadist? Really? Wrath is probably the least horrible of the names.

Hurrah for the dark, mysterious, brooding, handsome, protective warrior, last of their kind, and so on, but really? Can't you give your dark fantasy man a better name than that?

Nice to see a world where the vampires can't run around and turn humans, they're a different species. And you established a conflict between the vampires and another group, which is not werewolves and not humans. Good. Still interesting, and you built a unique spin. Good.

For the record, I picked up the latest book in the library and was thumbing through it, realized it was a series, and only after getting book one, did I realize it was vampires. Oh well.

This is one my favorite books of all time. I absolutely adore this book, the characters, the humor, the wit, and the twist Ward gives her vampires. Seeing as this is a romance there is some adult content and it is incredibly steamy. The plot is strong and you don't feel like you are reading a romance but more like a paranormal thriller, there is such depth and planning to the whole book, its great. Beth and Wrath have such a great charisma, I laugh, cry, and love everything through out this whole book.

I have read this series (The Black Dagger Brotherhood) many times and I am re-reading and reviewing the in honor of J.R. Ward's new series release tomorrow called "Covet".

I read it again to catch up for Lover at Last. 3/24/2013

Well, 3½ stars. A series and author new to me that I kept hearing about and putting off. Overall I enjoyed. Hard to review because summing the individual elements of the story does not actually portray the book. Some interesting twists on the normal paranormal race stuff, like the vampires being more likely prey than predator with the exception of the Black Dagger Brotherhood warrior group (clan? tribe?).

Some stuff so standard I mentally cringed and was preparing myself to bear in mind this series is one that has been ripped off a lot--like the very sexy leather clad dark hero or the generally oversudden-harlequin style of romance (suddenly in/out of love or lust for no explicable reason)--but the story, characters and writing carried it forward.

Kept me interested start to finish. Built up to a nice bit of worldbuilding with a let's-rebuild-our-civilization closure. Sorry I waited so long; was a little putoff by all the hype and the gang of characters who will each get their own book aspect (not always a favorite plot/series device for me). Likely to read more in series--but, spaced out just by personal preference (the lusty romance formula one I need to take in small doses even if curious what happens with the "brothers"). Hopefully, fewer pages will be devoted to getting inside cartoonish villain's, like Mr. X, head as that was one part of book that went on way too long and did not hold my interest.

I absolutely hated this book. One of the biggest problems with it is that the females are stereotyped as incredibly weak and pathetic not to mention subservient to the vampire males. The vampire Wrath completely dominates Beth's life once he steps in and there really isn't much to Beth's character. It even mentions how if a vampire doesn't like his chosen female he is aranged to marry the other males will see her as damaged. Another huge problem with it is that J.R. Ward projects a very negative stereotype of of pit bull type dogs.

Over all it is very cliche and emotionally overwrought. This book relies very heavily on stereotypes and unoriginal plots and characters. I do not recommend this to any one and I am ashamed I forced myself to finish it.

Proud to say that third time was indeed the charm. I never would've been able to finish DL if I hadn't fallen in love with all of the other Brothers first.

I wanted to get lost in Wrath's story as much as all the others but it just didn't gel. There was no tension at all between hero and heroine. Sure, this is a romance and we know the guy will get the girl at the end but would it kill the author to have a little struggle between the characters before they get their HEA? There didn't seem to be anything at stake. The couple never really doubted their connection which I guess is good if you're the leaders of your race and all.

    The Good:

-Tohr is made of awesome. When he's guarding Beth in her apartment and they're drinking beer and eating oatmeal cookies he seems like the perfect male. He totally puts her at ease. That quiet strength is seen throughout the story and makes my heart break even more for what happens to him in later books.

-Butch and Marissa. In the first read of LR these two annoyed the hell outta me. I thought both characters were whiny fidiots. DL changed all that. You see how Butch is already in a downward spiral that's going to kill him. The Brotherhood really does save him. As for Marissa, as the untouched and unwanted shellan of Wrath for hundreds of years her self esteem is in the crapper too. Butch sees her beauty and worth the first time he lays eyes on her and after a few fumbles (Wait, you're not a high class hooker? Luv ya Butch. Don't ever change.) you see the first steps of them falling in love. A re-read of LR is definitely in order now. These two are so adorable together!

    The Bad:
-Wrath. Man oh man I didn't like him. Every hero needs a tragic backstory, but the whining over his own got on my last nerve. Especially knowing what his Brothers have been through. Shut up, build a bridge and get over it. I couldn't get into the fact that this super BAMF still felt guilty three hundred years later over the deaths of his family. At least your father didn't try to castrate you!

    The Ugly:
The lack of tension really killed this for me. I need more angst between the hero and heroine to really feel invested in the story. There were no obstacles to their love. They basically hooked up on page 60 something and that was that. I recommend starting with Lover Eternal and then going back to see how it all began.

    Hot! Holy crap!

That's all I could think of while reading this. I love the cast of characters, the feeling that this is the beginning of a great series and most of all, the chemistry between Wrath and Beth. The author manages to write all kinds of scenes, including the intimate ones, that are believable and aren't creepy!! So many of the romance novels that have made it big lately have been incredibly uncomfortable to read and I didn't feel that even once while reading this one.

This series was amazing. The sex wasn't explicit, the romance was real, and boy was it hot. I definitely recommend it if you like romance books and it's not like there is a lot of biting as I've heard that it apparently puts a lot of people off romance books. These vampires didn't need to drink blood a lot so most of the time you thought they were human which was a nice change. Overall 5 out of 5 stars. I loved it and definitely recommend it!

Wow!! What a fantastic series!! Why did I wait so long to read it!! The perfect balance of adventure, romance and steamy action!

Wrath is a great character, super hot tortured vamp!! Oh and I can not wait for the rest of the Brotherhood to meet their matches!!

Beth is no simpering female she is a heroine worthy of a hunk like Wrath! I loved the whole dynamic.

The book is written from several different narratives. It gives a fuller picture of the whole story. It also sets up at least one future romance very nicely!

A truly engaging story with strong characters. Very well written and a pleasure to read. The perfect touches of humor to lighten the mood!

Cover Art - Nice but not nearly as engaging as the book!
