Early Life
Edmund Barton was born on January 18, 1849, in Glebe, in the Australian colony of New South Wales.
Edmund was the youngest of eleven surviving children. He had three older brothers and seven sisters. A younger brother born soon after Edmund’s third birthday lived for only nine months. This kept Edmund’s place as the youngest child.
His family fondly called him Toby. This nickname stuck throughout his life.
His parents were William and Mary Louise Barton. They
