- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very practical. No time wasting and the rules are well explained.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I like this program, but I would definitely recommend other activities to complement it. Like many beginner programs, Mr. Marx's method is heavy on memorization and light on practical application. I think this book would have been better if every week or so there was a reading assignment to test what we know so far, or more suggestions for integrating German into your daily life (he gives some ideas in the Introduction, but I think it would help to include more ideas and pepper them throughout). On the plus side, the lessons are very short, maybe 15 minutes a day for new material and 15 more for review. That way, once you've found some music you like or a pen pal to correspond with, you can spend most of your time using the language instead of just studying.
To get the most out of this book, after you've thoroughly done the daily lesson, including saying the words out loud et cetera, I'd suggest entering the day's sentences into a Spaced Repetition System like Anki or SuperMemo. The program will help you manage your review of old material. It provides the randomization that Mr. Marx suggests, and prioritizes the words that you learned recently or that you've had trouble with in the past, so you can spend your time where it'll do the most good.
Probably my biggest qualm about this book is the use of "fluent" in the title. As the author himself notes at the end of the 90 day program, the material here is only really enough to help you get to a high beginner level. Don't get me wrong, that's still pretty good. A high beginner can usually travel independently, have simple conversations if the other party is helpful and patient, and read a German-language newspaper with a little patience and occasional help from a dictionary. Still, "fluent" implies comfort and ease, and you probably won't be there after just 90 days.
I'm getting off the subject, but a word of advice for new learners:
Learning a language isn't necessarily difficult, but it's a long process. To give you a sense of scale, the German government sponsors a language program for recent immigrants. Graduates still won't be perfect speakers, but they'll know enough to get a job, make friends, and participate in their communities. That class is about 660 hours, or 3 hours per weekday for 10 months, plus the time they're expected to spend outside of class using the language. You can memorize the basics and start communicating pretty quickly, but reaching an expert level requires lots and lots of practice. Be patient and don't worry about making mistakes.7 people found this helpful
