Trace Monroe doesn't believe in luck. He never has. But when a fiery-headed cowgirl saunters through the saloon doors, wielding shotguns and a know-how for killing the living dead, he believes he just may be the luckiest man alive.

Trace wants to join Red's posse, but she prefers to work alone--less messy that way. In order to become her travelling companion, Trace has to agree to her terms: no names, no questions, and if he gets bit, he can't beg for mercy when she severs his brain stem.

He agrees, knowing only that Red is the sharpest shooter he's ever encountered. The fact she's stunning hasn't escaped his attention either.

What he doesn't know, is that Red has a very good reason to be on top of her game. She not only has the answer for how they can all outlive the plague taking over the wild, wild west, she IS the answer.

I received a complimentary copy of this book as a part of a book tour in exchange for a fair and honest review.Zombies, a spunky heroine and a hero smoother than butter make Angela Scott's Wanted: Dead or Undead a great start to The Zombie West series. With plenty of action, fun dialogue and enough romance to keep things going, this paranormal tale of the Old West captured my attention from the first page. Well developed characters and good world building make this book a strong entry in the YA field.A zombie hunter by necessity, Elisabeth, or "Red" as she's now known, is roaming West in order to locate her older brother. Disposing of the infected along the way has become a way of life for her, running into a handsome cowboy who won't leave her alone is an unexpected surprise. Becoming the leader of a small posse of uninfected was never a part of her plan.A gambler and a cowboy, Trace Monroe has always believed in his luck. How else could he explain "Red" walking into a saloon and saving the patrons from a zombie no one seemed to be able to take down. Realizing she's the girl on the "Wanted" poster could lead to a large reward, if he can gain her trust. Falling in love with her was definitely not a part of his plan. The scenes between "Red" and Trace, or "Cowboy" as Red likes to call him are full of humor, plenty of action and sharp dialogue. A loner by habit, Red really wants to be left alone to go her own way - something Cowboy has no intentions of letting her do. Learning to depend on each other becomes quite the adventure.Joined by some colorful and interesting secondary characters, Red and Cowboy make their way across the land. Will Red ever become comfortable enough to share the secrets to her zombie hunting success? Will her secret change the growing romance between Red and Cowboy? You'll have to read Wanted: Dead or Undead to find out. I liked it and I think you will too.

The lovely Author, Angela Scott, got in contact with me to ask if I would read and review Wanted: Dead or Undead. I automatically fell in love with cover as soon as I looked at it so I decided to read the summary. It was completely different from my usual flow of books but I was craving something new and fresh to read so I decided to give it a go. Honestly, I was a bit skeptical before I began, because like I said, it's a completely different genre from what I'm used to. But it really was a fantastic book! The story follows Trace, a cowboy who mainly likes to keep to himself ever since the zombie-apocalypse began. He has never had a family so he doesn't usually depend on many people. One day, a beautiful girl with red hair called Red enters the saloon, and he is immediately drawn to her. Not for the reasons you think. But for something completely different. She was the girl that he has seen on Wanted posters with a hefty price on her head so he is determined to befriend her and then hand her over to the sheriff when they get to the nearest town. But with trying to survive the wave of zombie attacks laid upon them everyday, they meet new people. People who Trace never expected he'd care about. They become his family and he would do everything to protect them all, including Red. Recently I have been getting really into the apocalyptic genre, but a zombie-apocalypse? AWESOME. I really, really love the whole concept of it. The world being taken over by a zombie race with very few survivors and the plague spreading quickly. I love how we see the world from Trace and Red's point of views because they are very different people. Red is the tough, head-strong, independent girl who doesn't trust anyone, not since her family died from the zombie attack. All she wants to do is survive and she doesn't need anyone distracting her. Then we have Trace, the guy who is just trying to get by day-by-day, who secretly craved the love of a family, in my opinion. Red is witty and stubborn whereas Trace is caring and protective. Despite the differences in their personalities, they were a match made in heaven. I think there's mainly only one thing I disliked, which was the sudden change in Red's personality. She had always been the strong one, ever since her family was cruelly taken away from her, then suddenly, she becomes this weak, emotional wreck who risks getting them killed on multiple occasions. I understand why though. I get that it has all become too much for her: the running, the zombie-attacks, this huge secret she is trying to keep from everyone. Anyone would break down because of that. But I really wanted her to go back to the way she was. I much prefer the head-strong girl from the beginning. Like I said at the start of this post, the cover is what drew me in. It's so stunning! I'm assuming that the guy is Trace, since the second book in the series has Red on the cover (see here). I think the whole abandoned western city is great and the splatter of blood behind the title is awesome. I didn't think I would like this book I was completely wrong. It was an incredible story which had you hooked from the very beginning. Not a moment goes by that leaves you bored and there's so much action it leaves you wanting to read more. I definitely think more people need to read it. Praise to Angela Scott for this beautifully written book.

So, zombies in the wild west. Not really much to say, it's exactly what you would expect: a badass YA heroine type, with a secret, who may just be the answer to the entire zombie problem, but set in a straight out of Zane Grey type old west setting.

I love westerns, always have, and I'm fond of zombie stories, so this was fun. It's fairly dark, lots of deaths and doom, and although marketed as YA, it didn't read as one to me.

It starts out with Red on her own and on the run from bounty hunters. She's heading west ahead of the zombie plague that claimed all her family except one brother, who she hopes to find on the trail. Then she somewhat unwillingly picks up Trace, who has ulterior motives--he's seen her wanted poster--but slowly (not too insta-lovey) falls for her. They also pick up Wen, a chinese-american also on the trail--VERY nice to see some diversity, and he's not written as any kind of stereotype either. And eventually a gaggle of orphaned kids. Always on their trail are the zombies, and the bounty hunters, ahead is only hope and the unknown.

I could nitpick the setting a bit, there's the odd anachronism, especially in the dialog, but I was enjoying the story enough they didn't bother me too much. Which is great, because that kind of thing usually pulls me right out.

I got this for free on Amazon, mostly because the idea of a zombie Western amused me, and I thought it was a good combination.
Turns out it's an AWESOME combination.

This book exceeded my expectations wildly. I loved the characters, the interesting deviations from the standard zombie story (i.e. Red's blood KILLS zombies. I hope they weaponize that in later books.)

The whole team dynamic was kind of adorable. The only thing I didn't care for was when Wen found his girlfriend in the castle, and they had a baby. It felt too much like Walking Dead to me.

    Otherwise, spot on, Ms. Scott!
