About this ebook

Clan, Episode 9 - the next Bitesize episode following our hero, Calum Maclean.

Calum confronts the spy, Isobel, as she stands by the bed of the sleeping Bonnie Prince Charlie with a dirk in her hand. He can’t kill the love of his life, but when she renounces her allegiance to the Crown, he forgives her and promises to find her when the war is over.

The Prince asks Calum and John to ride with him to Derby where he will rejoin his army and continue the invasion of England. He would’ve liked to have ordered them to act as bodyguards, but even the Prince knows when to shut up and ask.

It is the wisest decision he has ever made. The road south is a dangerous place for a would-be king and only Calum’s wit can save them from a bloody end.

York’s plan to kill the Prince and collect the reward relies on two scruffy English army deserters, but they are more afraid of York than the whole highland army.

If York’s plan succeeds, then the war will be over at the very moment of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s glorious entry into Derby. And York will be rich.

Saving the Prince could cost Calum Maclean his life, but because nobody has ordered him to try, he will try.

There are no certainties in war, only danger, blood and death. And Calum will meet them all head-on.

    Calum’s Promise

Calum jumped from his horse before it had stopped and took the steps up to Moy Hall three at a time. He guessed the big doors would be locked at this time of night and raised his fist to bang on them the moment he reached the top step.

It seemed like a minor miracle when the doors opened as he approached, but the miracle was that the ancient butler was still at his post at three in the morning.

Calum skidded to a halt and stared at the apparition standing at the door, his ghostly appearance made more so by the light from the candle he sheltered from the night air, flickering on his long white nightshirt.

Fraser! It’s the middle of the night.

It is, sir, the old man said. Is there something I can do for you?

Calum stepped into the house and closed the door against the cold before it did what time seemed to be having trouble doing and Frasier’s hourglass ran out.

    Where is Isobel?

The old man looked at him steadily without a hint of expression. She is in bed, sir. He looked towards the stairs. As is everyone. Sir.

Calum strode towards the stairs. Which room? The master guest room?

No, sir. That room is presently being used by His Royal Highness.

Calum stopped and turned on his heels. The prince is here?

Unless you think I am referring to King George, sir.

Calum ran up the stairs and along the gallery to the door at the far end. It was always going to be the one at the far end.

He stopped for a moment with his hand on the doorknob and listened intently. He was about to burst into the prince’s room in the middle of the night. If the prince had a bodyguard, then there would be little time for explanations, but plenty for fighting.

He opened the door slowly, foregoing the bursting-in part, and put his head around the edge, expecting to see the prince fast asleep. What he saw was Isobel standing next to the bed with a dirk held at her side.

    Now he bust in.

Isobel! He strode across to the bed and put his hand on her arm, pinning it to her side.

The prince woke up and sat bolt upright. What is the meaning of this?

Shut up, Calum said without looking at the man in the long shirt and nightcap.

He led Isobel away from the bed.

She looked at him, then closed her eyes. You know, don’t you?

He nodded once. Aye. He took the knife from her and tossed it onto the bed. The prince jumped as if he thought it had been thrown. Calum ignored him.

    Would you have done it?

    She glanced at the prince.

Calum turned her and put his hands on her shoulders. Not him. Jamie?

Her jaw hardened. What do you think I am? She pulled loose and stepped back. York is a monster. A monster who turns good people into monsters. I have done things I’m ashamed of.
