A Guardians of the Gate City Tale
By Lisa Williamson
Standing in the rain is all part of the job. Well my job that is. The wet didn't bother me all that much really. After all a good trench coat is part of my normal day but the woman across the street looked miserable. Winter had come in days before but snow had yet to fall. The temperature refused to dip that one or two degrees that would let the moisture turn to snow instead of icy rain. To be totally honest snow would be much better right now. This rain was bone chilling.
The heavy soaking rain with wind made umbrellas pretty useless for most. If you didn't have the right coat you would be soaked to the skin in no time. It was pretty obvious that she didn't have the right coat. It interested me that she managed to keep her umbrella in one piece but I could see she was pretty much soaked from the hips down from the rain.
Why she was waiting in the doorway became clear a few minutes later when a boy came out dressed in a bright yellow slicker and rubber boots. He was kind of cute dressed like a little yellow duck. She knelt down and gave him a quick hug before taking his hand. From across the way I could see the resemblance. While his coloration was brighter than the woman he was obviously related. In a way it was really touching. This mother was there for her little boy. When a man came out as they started away I had to step forward.
Caroline you can have him till Christmas Eve but you better have him back by 8pm. You got that?
The tone the man used was rude, like he thought so little of the woman that he didn't care who or what heard it.
What she said back I could not quite catch. Her voice was soft, almost musical and she did not look at him at all. She started away, the little boy skipping at her side. 8PM! I mean it. Not a minute later or I will call the cops! Don't think I won't!
If I hadn't been hired to do something else I would have had a word or three with the jerk, but the job came first. As the woman and boy headed down the street I followed them. She walked him a few blocks down the street to a battered old Chevy. Why she had to park so far away was all part of the story that was unfolding. Yeah the car was old but it wasn't rusty at all. Yes it had been around a long time but it had been cared for. Obviously mister jerk did not want her vehicle near his nice new and pricey one.
As she made sure to buckle the boy in the back seat nice and safe I smiled. You could see that the boy thought he should be able to buckle up himself but he let his mom have this little thing to make her happy. I could hear her telling him that she had so many good things planned for the next few days but that they had to do something first.
When she went back around to the driver's side I ducked into my truck. Following her from the side street and back into town was pretty easy. Nashua isn't exactly that complicated to a native. I expected her to head toward her apartment over on Pearl Street but she pulled into the lot of SNHMC.
It took me a moment but I added two and two together. I had been told that the boy would be visiting with his mother and sister in their little apartment just before the holiday. I had been tasked with watching them and making sure they were okay. I had thought that she had left her daughter home with a friend but obviously that wasn't what happened.
Pulling out my phone I made a quick call. A couple of questions and I knew why I had been hired. If the daughter were in the hospital this close to Christmas then she would need a lot of help just to make the holiday a good one.
The woman, Caroline, had been married to a nasty little man. One who thought nothing of breaking up his family when someone richer and younger came along. He had dumped the wife, kept the son and totally ignored his sick daughter. Ignored her to the point of convincing a judge that the girl was
