- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A great insight into how to maximize your efforts in a marketplace where everyone is struggling for the spotlight.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I learned so much from this book I almost felt like I was in school again (and that's a good thing). By the end, I'd gathered an arsenal of notes and formed a game plan for the launch of my own book. It's tightly written and jam-packed with useful tips. With a plethora of free and paid self-publishing/marketing information out there, this book is definitely worth your time.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I had already picked up numerous marketing tips by reading the blogs and tips of my peers, but David Gaughran has collated and documented the mysterious algorithms in such a way as to make sense of the soup. This book is largely Amazon USA centric and only barely touches upon the other platforms and international markets, but it does not purport to be more than that in the book blurb, so I will give it 5 stars.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was a short book, but that was a good thing. It was short because it knew what it wanted to say, and it got on and said it without having padding and junk to fill up pages.
The content was useful and came from a knowledgeable source.
Well done to David for telling authors what they need to know and not taking up too much of the their precious writing time in the process.
Authors understand authors.
I paid 49p for this on Amazon but its worth a fair bit more than that.
Good value for money with good content.
If you are an author and you are trying to work what Amazon algorithms are actually doing, this will help you out.
A large part of the junk on the internet won't help you out.
Stick with this. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Ideally, I would wait to write this review until my book sales have increased exponentially and I’m sitting on a tropical beach, having retired from my day job. But it seems a little unfair to saddle Mr. Gaughran with that responsibility.
So, with that caveat, I am impressed. This book delivered what I wanted, was clearly laid out, and did not seek to ‘pad’ itself with fluffy irrelevance. Great use was made, too, of links to web resources and I appreciated the occasions when Mr. Gaughran simply pointed us to information when he felt greater expertise was to be found elsewhere.
There are no magic bullets here, but the dissection of Amazon’s various lists is thorough and will appeal to you if you have an analytical nature. The material gave me a new perspective on ‘free’ and price pulsing and served to reinforce my belief that the best marketing is, in fact, to write (and publish) the next book.
However, I followed the advice and am now enjoying #3 bestseller position in a niche category. I'll be keeping this book handy for future tweaks, too.
Just to be clear, the content is almost totally directed at selling on Amazon. And don’t expect quick fixes: you’ll have to do your own research, digging and legwork to implement the strategies. But no-one said this would be easy, right? ;) - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is the second book in David Gaughran's Let's Get Publishing series, and like the first, it is beautifully written and presented, and the language is simple enough for anyone to understand.
In the first half of the book, Gaughran explains the differences between all the different Amazon lists (Bestseller, Popularity, and Hot New Releases), and exactly what goes into Amazon's Sales Rank. There's also an invaluable discussion about Amazon's Category system, and an explanation of how their recommendation engines work.
The second half of the book, using that knowledge, gives some pointers on how to run a successful book launch, and how to evaluate marketing and advertising opportunities.
From the above, you've gathered that it's quite Amazon-centric, although there is a brief introduction into other options. That's because Amazon is really the "biggest fish" in the game right now, with the most advanced algorithms, and it's consequently the retailer where most self-published authors are going to be focusing most of their efforts, for good or ill.
I think the book might be a bit outdated at this stage, having been published in 2013 already, but I really don't think that the core concepts, and the basic ways in which the algorithms work, would've changed too much since then. Maybe one or two minor technical details, sure, and one of the things that Amazon was "experimenting" with at the time of writing has since come to pass, but the book is still very useful today.
The only thing I missed (maybe it was actually in the book, but I honestly did miss it) was the difference between Sales Rank and Author Rank. I'd really like to know that! - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5More great advice here from a pro.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This amazing resource for authors outlines several strategies authors can apply to help their books gain visibility during different phases of the publishing process. Some of the items discussed include how the Amazon algorithms and book lists work, which advertising options are worth investing in, and how to make BISAC categories work for you. The author does a superb job organizing a plethora of information in a way that is crystal clear and never too overwhelming. There are things within and beyond our control as authors, and Gaughran never promises success, but he does take the mystery out of digital publishing by discussing several approaches authors can take to give their books a better shot. This is an excellent reference work that all independent writers and publishers should own.
