Cursed Movies - Tabatha Kristy
A curse (also called a jinx, hex or execration) is any expressed wish that some form of adversity or misfortune will befall or attach to some other entity. In particular, curse
may refer to a wish that harm or hurt will be inflicted by any supernatural powers, such as a spell, a prayer, an imprecation, an execration, magic, witchcraft, God, a natural force, or a spirit. In many belief systems, the curse itself is considered to have some contributory force in the result.
The Exorcist
––––––––
Did you know that around those associated with the movie world swear that anyone who was involved in the production of ‘The Exorcist’ will be cursed for life?
‘The Exorcist’ was one of the most notorious horror films ever made when it came out in 1973. Young girls were being assisted out of the cinema severely affected by what they had seen. The big screen was filled with actors vomiting, fainting, and breaking into hysterics. The film became one of the most profitable horror films of all grossing $402,500,000 worldwide. The film earned ten Academy Award nominations, winning one for Best Sound and Best Adapted Screenplay.
The story is based on the demonic possession of a young girl, Regan Macneil (Linda Blair) and her Mother, Chris Macneils (Ellen Burstyn). Chris desperately attempts to release her daughter of this demonic presence with the help of two priests. The film ‘The Exorcist’ was adapted from the 1971 Novel that was based on factual events which took place in Maryland in 1949.
The curse begins with the first deaths of Jack MacGowran and Vasiliki Maliaros, who play Burke the director and Karras' mother. Both of them died before the film's release. They are also the two characters who die during the course of the film. Following the release, Linda Blair received death threats because people believed she was glorifying Satan.
As a result, Warner Brothers had to hire personal bodyguards to accompany her where ever she went for six months.
During the filming, Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn both suffered back injuries from stunts where their characters were thrown around the room. Ellen Burstyn sustained permanent spinal damage and her character's scream in the film is her actual painful scream.
There were several deaths that occurred during the making of this film and soon after the conclusion of ‘The Exorcist’. Actress Ellen Burstyn declares that there were nine deaths in all, and is quoted as saying there was an enormous amount of deaths connected with the film
. Jack MacGowran, the actor that played the role of Burke Dennings, died shortly before the film’s release. On January 30, 1973, Burke MacGowran died of complications from the flu, at the early age of only 55. This was only a little over a month before the film’s official release. Oddly, Burke MacGowran’s character also dies in the film.
Valsiliki Maliaros also died before the release of ‘The Exorcist’, the actress that played the role of Father Karras’s mother. She was 90 years old when she passed away on February 9, 1973 of natural causes. Was it natural causes or was it the curse? Also, Lee J. Cobb, the actor that played Lieutenant Kinderman, died three years after the film’s release in 1976 at the
