    About Amelia Rose

    Chapter One

Honey Whitmore needed a place she could stay hidden for a while. She did not mind if it was some backwater in Texas. She just needed a place where the media could not find her, a place where she could get away from it all and somehow reconnect with the girl she used to be a very long time ago. That place turned out to be the Circle O ranch. She could not remember how she first came across the place; it must have been some long-forgotten memory from childhood. She just knew that when she went to Google to search for … she did not even know what she was searching for that day when the Circle O Ranch came up. But it had triggered something deep inside her and that something had her packing up a single bag several months later and making the trip to Texas.

Coincidentally, they needed a ranch hand, and even though she’d had no contact with horses for close to a decade, she saw the mind numbing physical labor as a blessing. It did not make her forget, but it stopped her from thinking, and that was all she needed. She had made no friends on the ranch, she was civil to everyone and she did her job. Her motto was ask me no questions and I’ll ask you none in return.

As she mended one of the fences that had been broken the night before, she adjusted her hat and smiled to herself. She knew she was a mystery, especially amongst the other hands; they found her interesting and maybe fascinating. Whatever, she did not care. She just wanted to be left alone. Maybe someday she would be able to reclaim her life or at the very least, build a new one for herself. Right now, she just wanted to not remember.

    Hey, how’s it going?

She turned and used her hand to shield her eyes from the harsh glare of the sun as she gazed up on the man on horseback. Caleb O’Connor, nephew of the owner of the Circle O, Red O’Connor. From what she heard, he had arrived at the ranch shortly before she did, but she knew him because he kept dogging her footsteps. Each way she turned, there he was.

She used the sleeve of her shirt to wipe the dust from her brow and went back to work. This one, she had long since ceased to be civil toward.

You are going to have to talk to me someday, you know.

I do talk to you. I tell you to go away and sometimes, I even ask you to get lost. she said, without taking her eyes off what she was doing. She heard his low chuckle nonetheless.

You have a saucy tongue on you, wench.

She turned to look at him then and narrowed her eyes in warning. Seeing the sparkle in his eyes, she decided he had only called her wench to get her goad. Well, she was not going to indulge him.

    Get lost, Caleb.

Be still my heart, he murmured with a chuckle. She knows my name.

Shouldn’t you be working? Doing something to earn your way around here?

Nope. I’m waiting to inherit the ranch.

    Well, good luck with that.

She knew he was not serious, but even if he were, Red O’Connor had several kids and one of them, Andrew, had been running the Circle O for close to ten years. She was not sure exactly what Caleb did, but she knew Andrew had gone to find him and since he’d arrived, Circle O had been showing more profit. At least that was the ranch hands were saying. Whatever he did, he did not fool her. He had the look about him of someone with considerable personal wealth. There was a kind of self-assurance that wealthy people had; and she was not talking about the pompous self-importance rich people had. No, this was different. This was a deep personal awareness…a deep knowledge that regardless of what happened, he had whatever it took to regain his fortunes. She recognized it. She did not possess that self-assurance, but because she craved it so much, it was easy for her to spot it.

The offer for dinner is still open.

She looked up to see that he had dismounted his horse and had come to stand a few feet from her. She went back to mending the fence.

What is this? she asked with derision. The high and mighty O’Connor showing pity to the lowly ranch hand?

He chuckled and she gritted her teeth in annoyance. She had been trying to frustrate him for weeks and he just kept coming back.

It’s more like the lowly ranch hand showing pity to the high and mighty O’Connor.

She felt her lips twitch in reluctant amusement and dug her teeth into the lower lip. She was not going to smile. She did not want to do a single thing to encourage him.

    Go away, Caleb.

Fine, I’ll go away. But you know me-

Yes, I know…you’ll be back. she said wearily, completing his sentence. I just wish you would get the message that I’m not interested in dinner.

If you don’t like to eat in the evening, we could do drinks. he suggested.

I don’t do drinks, She was becoming exasperated.

    At all?

She placed her hand on her hip and pointed to his horse. Shoo…right now!

Yes, ma’am, he said with a grin, tipping his hat to her. Since you won’t have dinner with me, I’ll bring dinner to you. He threw over his shoulder as he walked to his horse.

    Wait…what?

I will be at your place by eight tonight. Be there. With a lazy salute, he was gone.

Honey stood looking after him in shock. She felt a wave of anticipation, liberally spiked with apprehension, wash over her. So he thought he could just issue orders arbitrarily, did he? Who did he think he was? Her evenings were hers and if she chose not to spend them with one of her bosses, she had every right not to. With a huff, she went back to her work, but she could not keep the faint excitement rising within her. She paused and placed her hand on her belly; she could feel the butterflies dancing within and that was not acceptable. She came here to get away from it all, and that included smooth, gorgeous looking cowboys. She made up her mind right there that she would find somewhere else to be that evening.

Caleb walked into the office and stood by the door. He watched the man peer into the computer and wondered how two people could be so different and yet so similar.

Any luck convincing her to go out with you? The other man asked, without turning around.

Caleb shrugged even though he knew the man could not see him. He took off his hat and flung it on a nearby table.

    Yes and no.

That got the other man’s attention. His was sitting on a swivel chair and he slowly spun around to stare at Caleb. Andrew O’Connor had a lopsided smile on his face, pretty much like the one Caleb spotted any time he was ribbing Honey. It was almost like looking into a mirror image.

So, what did you come up with? Andrew asked.

Caleb grinned and shrugged again. I asked her out again, he said.

And let me guess, she turned you down, again.

In a nutshell, he said with a nod. So I told her I would be at her place by eight.

    Andrew looked impressed. And…?

    Caleb
