      Chapter 1

      Damn it, why doesn’t she call me? Ellis slammed her book shut. It had been almost four hours since Katie had phoned to say she and her family were headed to the hospital to be tested for AIDS... and still no word. Trying to study was impossible. Ellis couldn’t concentrate on her homework. All she could think of was Katie’s call.

      She wished she could be with Katie as she went through this, but couldn't be for obvious reasons. She had talked to Katie about going with her to the hospital to be with her when she had the test done, but Katie didn't think it was a good idea, since her whole family would be there. Ellis had agreed to stay away only if Katie would call her as soon as she knew something.

      Feeling the muscles tightening in her neck and shoulders from the tension, she decided she would get a hot shower to relax, so she pulled the phone in the bathroom with her so she wouldn't miss Katie's call.

      As the hot water ran down her back she couldn't stop worrying about Katie, and she sank to the floor sitting with her arms wrapped around her legs, crying. Her mind raced with thoughts of what the test results would be.

      Katie's aunt had been so sick during her chemotherapy treatments and had needed round-the-clock care, so Katie and her mom had gone many nights to stay with her to give her husband and kids a break to get out of the house. Surely none of them had caught AIDS just helping clean around the house and sitting with her.

      Ellis sobbed uncontrollably, worried that Katie might have AIDS and that she could lose her when they were just really beginning their life together.

      Ellis jumped when the phone rang, and she yanked the shower curtain back to grab the phone.

      Hello.

      Hey, it's me. Why do I hear water running?

      I'm in the shower. What did the doctor say?
