1 FROM THE JOURNAL OF THE HEALER, THERESA
I have met the most delightful young man named Adrian. He is a minstrel from Framlingham. Adrian has come to William's kingdom to learn more about the last of the known dragons, Farloft and James. He is a singer of songs, a weaver of tales and a accomplished artist. He and Sarah hit it off immediately. She is already offering to share her ink making techniques. I caught them over-brewing walnut husks yesterday in my study.
I am fully moved into Laval's old apartments in the castle. It seems like home being there again. I have to review all of Laval's notes and his materials, but that can wait until winter when we are all shut in for the cold weather. For now it is the height of spring and I am anxious to be out and seeing things grow.

2 LAVENDER SOAP AND LADIES
Could I have some more?
Adrian asked.
Of course,
I said, as I dug into the chest in what was now my healer's chamber in the castle, on the condition that you let me have a look at your neck again.
Sure,
Adrian agreed. He pulled his raven black hair to one side so I could look at the back of his neck where I had lanced the boil.
That was how we met. Adrian came to me with the complaint that his neck was swollen and tender. He couldn't see it, but it was a boil the size of a walnut. In my studies in the east I learned many valuable lessons concerning fevers and pustules of the skin. I put that knowledge to work. I cleaned the skin. I cleansed the knife I was to use to lance the skin with fire, water and spirits. Once I drained the boil I told Adrian it was very important to keep it clean. I offered him a small bar of soap I made for distribution to my patients when I made such a request. Unlike the east, the western culture does not value cleanliness. I was taught in the east, as it was proved over and over to me, that keeping the wound clean helped it heal much faster.
Adrian sat down on the stool next to my work bench. The wound on the back of his neck was almost healed.
You have been keeping it clean, I see,
I commented as I noticed the lack of a ring of dirt around his neck and collar. I patted him on the back to dismiss him. It looks fine, almost healed.
Thanks to you.
He let his hair go. It fell down in waves caressing his shoulders. He wore it loose in the back with a fat braid on each side of his face laced with beads and tied with colorful ribbons. I have found the ladies like a freshly scented man. I find myself quite sought after. I would never have known if not for you, Healer.
That was why Adrian was here today. He wanted more of my homemade soap. The hint of lavender made the ladies Adrian's willing companions in the heat of early spring after a long cold winter.
I handed him two bars. One for you and one for the lady,
I said with a sly smile.
Best give me a handful,
he said with a wink back. I'll see they get passed around.
He is not only a minstrel, storyteller and artist. He is quite the rogue.
3 SINGED BUT NOT BURNT
Aunt T, what happened to your hair?
Sarah asked in dismay.
I had plopped myself into a chair in the sitting room we shared between our separate bedrooms and I was combing out my hair.
I singed it a bit working on one of Laval's spells.
It was more than a little singed. The whole compartment smelled of burnt hair.
Let me help,
Sarah offered. She took the brush from my hand and started to work it through my hair. I am afraid we will have to trim it a little.
I chuckled. A little? I think a lot.
Well, about so,
Sarah indicated holding her fingers about four inches apart.
Have at it. The scissors are in the top draw of the chest.
I was resigned. In any case, I wore it in a braid down my back to keep it out of the way while working. Not many would notice the trim. It was my eyebrows that I was concerned about. I was looking at what was left of them in a hand mirror.
You did in your eyebrows too,
Sarah said looking over my shoulder into the mirror. Maybe we can draw on some for you. I hope whatever you were working on was worth it. You are certainly going to look odd until they grow back.
I have been called worse things than odd, and yes, I think it will be worth it when it is finished.
I rubbed at my brows. Flakes of burnt hair fell into my lap and I was left with little more than the equivalent of a man's evening beard shadow. I ran across the receipt for the potion that turned James into a dragon. I have been working on a reversal.
Though I knew James' feelings about remaining in his dragon form, things had changed of late.
Why?
Sarah asked, quite honestly.
Because he is a boy that was accidentally turned into a dragon. He was never meant to be a dragon. It was Laval's doing.
But he's happy as a dragon and Farloft would be lost without him,
Sarah said. She ran the brush through my hair once more and then began to clip the bottom off straight.
