1850's England. Anais Darnby and Lindsay Markham have been friends since childhood. When they finally realise they are in love with each other and make love in Lindsay's barn the future course seem certain. However Lindsay's drug habit and a confused encounter with another woman while under the influence of drugs drives Anais away. Lindsay retreats to the exotic East and falls further into the alluring red smoke and addictive beauty of opium. This book definately fits into the genre of erotic fiction as it seems there is a sex scene every second or third page. All well and good for the first half of the book but then it becomes a bit tedious.

Heart tugging story about opium addiction and it's affect on these peoples life. Much of the story was told from the characters thoughts and I skimmed a lot. I felt sympathetic but I never really liked the hero or heroine. Anais and Lindsay have loved each other since childhood but their behavior tears them apart.

I'm going to have to chew on this one for a bit before I can review this. That star rating is subject to change as well.

I will say that it's the best book I didn't enjoy reading.

Over the top. Anais is too perfect and Lindsey has major impulse control issues. First sex scene is a few pages into the story, and that's acceptable because they have been in love forever. Then, after a ten month separation both of them are high (Lindsey on opium and Anais on laudanum) she is sick and he has sex with her. What kind of hero does that? He claims to love her but couldn't control his desire. The big secret is fairly obvious. I was annoyed at the frequent reference to it, 'my secret', 'my shame' I just wanted the secret out already. When the big reveal came, I couldn't believe Anais' poor choices. A bit melodramatic. Anais is too perfect, doesn't want to hurt anyone, not angry at Lindsay for leaving her. Where is her spine? His drunken father and her promiscuous mother are characatures of evil, I couldn't take them seriously. On the plus side, the cover is beautiful.

I just could not find much to enjoy in this erotic historical novel. The central characters felt two-dimensional and lack depth in their development. Lindsay's addiction to opium is discussed more than actually displayed. The plot felt weak, and I struggled to understand two characters that avow they are not in a relationship but yet manage to hop into bed with each other every other chapter. However, I must say that the last quarter of the novel had more development and action than the earlier portion.

This was not your standard feel good kind of historical romance. I have to say I found myself rather numb when I finished it. Featherstone captured the anguish of what an addiction can do to the one experiencing it along with the family and friends also affected by it. She also did an excellent job of detailing the love the H/h had for each other although, at times, even that love was addictive. Good read. I recommend but don't plan on a feel good, mushy, happy kind of thing here. This read is intense.

A Victorian Red Poppy RomanceSet in Worcestershire England in 1860, Lindsay Markham has been in love with his neighbor Anais Darnby since they were children. Now old enough to claim his childhood sweetheart as his own, Lindsay professes his enduring love and seduces his lovely Anais in the horse stables after they go for a midnight ride on their Arabian stallions. As they finish their first tryst, Lindsay tells Anais he wants her as his wife and that he will officially propose at the evening costume ball. As a lover of all things oriental, and an experienced traveler to many far off exotic lands such as Constantinople and the Middle East, Lindsay asks Anais to dress as a harem girl for the luxurious gala affair. However, Anais’ best friend Rebecca has a mind to capture Lindsay for herself. She steals Anais beautiful costume, and tricks Lindsay into eating hashish laced cake just before the ball. Under the influence of both the drugged cake and a few smoked opium pipes, Lindsay arrives at the masquerade seeing his dream come true thinking that the luscious beauty before him is his lovely Anais, not seeing through the opium fog that it is Rebecca beneath the silken veils. Verbalizing his desire and debauching Rebecca on the palace balcony close to Anais’ ears, totally believing that Rebecca IS his bride to be, Anais watches this scene in horror. Crushed, she realizes her night of love in the barn was nothing but a joke as she witnesses Rebecca encircled in Lindsay’s arms. Enraged and painfully hurt, Anais runs, leaving Lindsay screaming for forgiveness and the story now unfolds as the two lovers lash out in pain unable to forgive each others errors, both moving through life making serious mistakes that are caused by their shattered hearts, and the inability to swallow their pride. Torn apart by Lindsay’s betrayal, Anais pretends to run to France telling everyone she needs time to heal, but is actually hiding in a cottage nearby, with a dreadful secret she swears never to reveal. Lindsay vowing to find her and gain her forgiveness follows the leads only to come up empty and with heavy heart returns to Orient to drown his sorrows in very opium den Turkey has to offer. Love and Pain, tortures of the heart and soul, a man addicted to the red smoke of Opium that slowly drags him into hell, and a woman torn between love and lust and a deadly secret that just might tear her world to shreds. This is the best erotic romance I have ever read. Finally a romance author who can blend a realistic love story with literary style writing that is not just filled with uninspiring sex scenes and sappy dialog! Addicted has believable characters that endure real life circumstances of love and loss, and Charlotte Featherstone shows great talent to mix those ingredients with darn good writing. I was totally riveted to this love story, and found the erotic scenes both tender and seductive offering arousal and appeal. What I appreciated more than anything was the author’s ability to write exceptionally well which I find rare in romance novels. This was truly an outstanding cut-above-the-rest erotica novel that the romance genre really should pay attention to. I plan to find every book this author has written.
