    Chapter One: Introduction

The Watsons Go to Birmingham 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis was written and published in the year 1995. It is a historical-fiction novel. The book was republished in the year 1997.

The story revolves around a very loving African-American family. The family lives in the town of Flint, Michigan. The year is 1963.

The oldest son of the family begins to get into some trouble. His parents decide that the son should go and live with his strict grandmother, Grandma Sands. She is the mother of Mrs. Watson. Grandma Sands lives in Birmingham, Alabama.

To go to Alabama, the family travels by car. During their visit, certain tragic events take place and all of them are affected in one way or another.

Although it is a fiction and the Watson family is also fictitious, the story is based on the factual 1963 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham. That incident had worked like a catalyst for the American civil-rights movement in the country.

The story is set in the year 1963. It takes place during the civil rights movement. In spite of being a children’s classic, the novel explores certain significant themes such as discrimination, prejudice, segregation, civil rights, etc.

The real historical event, the Church bombing, happens to be a major event in the novel.

Having written this novel, the author was extremely satisfied and he said that The Watsons Go to Birmingham 1963 showed him what he wanted to do with the rest of his life.

The Watsons Go to Birmingham 1963 was the first published novel written by Curtis. While writing the book, he used to do several dull jobs in his hometown of Flint, Michigan.

The success of this novel entirely changed the author’s career track. There is a bit of reality in the book. Several conversations, historical events, and certain characteristics of family and friends are real.

The author once said during an interview that Byron, the elder brother in the novel, is one of his favorite characters he has ever produced. Byron struggles to find himself.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

The story begins in Flint, Michigan. The Watsons are a black family. They live in Flint. Wilona is the mother. She comes from Birmingham, Alabama. Daniel is the father.

After her marriage, Wilona had moved to Flint with her husband Daniel. They have three children: Byron, Kenny, and Joetta or Joey. They are 13, 10, and 5 years old respectively.

Ten-year old Kenny is the protagonist of the novel. He happens to be a very smart boy, but he is relatively quiet. Although Byron is older, he is just short of a juvenile delinquent. He is aggressive and likes breaking the rules. Little Joey is very sensitive and strictly follows rules.
