Translator’s Introduction
David Karma Choephel
In recent years, more people in developed countries have developed the wish to do the special preliminary practices for mahamudra meditation. Yet the traditional ngondro practice—which Tibetans generally practice in the confines of a retreat—is hard for many people to fit into their lives, as the text is relatively long and reciting it in Tibetan can be daunting even with a transliteration.
For this reason among others, in 2006 the Seventeenth Gyalwang Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje composed a new short ngondro practice specifically for students from developed countries. The text is shorter so that it will be easier for people with jobs and busy lives to incorporate into their schedule, and the Gyalwang Karmapa said that people may also do the practice in their own language. In December of 2006, His Holiness gave instructions on this new short preliminary practice to a group of students from East Asian and Western countries at Tergar Monastery in Bodhgaya, India.
This book includes all the materials a student will need to do this practice, including the Short Vajradhara Lineage Prayer, verses on the four common preliminaries, His Holiness’ Brief Recitations for the Four Preliminary Practices, and the instructions the Gyalwang Karmapa gave. The translation of the root text was prepared, based on earlier translations, by Tyler Dewar for His Holiness’ visit to the United States in 2008. The text of the instructions is a translation of a transcript of the Tibetan-language teachings in December of 2006. It was transcribed, edited, and published by Drophen Tsuklak Petunkhang, the publishing arm of the Tsurphu Labrang, in 2008.
However, this book is not a substitute for oral instructions from a qualified master. Because His Holiness the Karmapa had only four days to teach these practices, he had to omit many details and did not explain the postmeditation practice. For this reason, anyone wishing to do the practice included in this book should first receive the reading transmission (lung) and then ask an experienced lama for instructions and guidance. In particular, His Holiness asked that cameras and other recording devices be turned off during the teachings on guru yoga, and thus this book does not include any instructions on guru yoga. In order to practice guru yoga one will need to make a connection with a living master and receive the proper guidance.
I would like to thank the following people and organizations for their assistance in preparing this translation: the Tsurphu Labrang and Drophen Tsuklak Petunkhang; Ringu Tulku Rinpoche; Khenpo Lodrö Tengye and Cheng Sheng Publications from Taiwan for their assistance in comparing this translation against the Chinese; Lhundup Damchö for editing; and Tyler Dewar for his assistance and gracious permission to use his translation of the root text.
