Her era of reign in Georgia is described as the “Golden Age” of the medieval Georgian Monarchy.
She was the first woman who ruled Georgia in her own right. She was widely accepted and conferred the title mep’e (king).
Her father, the reigning king George IIII, proclaimed Tamar and heir and co-ruler in the year 1178, but after the death of her father she had to face a strong opposition upon her ascension to full ruling powers.
She did succeed in neutralizing this opposition and then she started a very energetic foreign policy which was helped by the downfall of the rival powers of the Seljuqid and the Byzantine empires.
