About this ebook
Our population has increased life expectancy across the board, however we are capable of a healthy life that benefits us, our family, and community. The body is a marvel at deflecting, absorbing, and repairing damage that occurs as a result of diet, environment, and other factors. By age 30 or so our body begins a slow but steady depletion of these bodily functions, which essentially starts the aging process. This book is here to help you understand the physiological processes that stave off aging and affect cellular repair. Then we discuss sources of these damaging effects. The most important concept this book offers is not only to define a healthy diet, but to also define the dark side of our food, environment, and life choices. The book then prioritizes ways to maximize your health, energy, and well-being. If you read this book with an appetite for knowledge – I assure you a positive outlook that you will share with the ones you love. Show your love!

Chapter I – The Body
What is a telomere or even telomerase? It is the most significant anti-aging mechanism found in the cells of our body. A telomere is a protective end-cap of amino acids that keep our chromosomes intact and telomerase is an enzyme that constantly repairs the telomeres keeping our DNA protected. In the lab, cells live about three (3) days before dying… if telomerase is kept in the cell IT WILL LIVE INDEFINATELY! Unfortunately by age 30 our telomerase activity is about 70% compared to that of an 18 year old. At age 70, it is a mere 2%. This is why we age and this is why we age quickly as we get older.
If that has not scared you off from technical overload, then it is all downhill from here. I will briefly demonstrate a few key pathways that our body magnificently possesses to operate towards keeping us young and vibrant. This chapter will also introduce, although briefly, some key damaging effects that our body must face on a daily basis.
So let us start to discuss the body, its features, and proponents. The blueprint of the body is contained within the DNA of our chromosomes. These are inherited from both our parents during the reproductive process. Some traits are known to come from our mother, for example, male pattern baldness: If your mother’s father was bald, a male offspring will most likely follow. One thing is certain, all our traits, genes, and DNA comes from our parents.
Cell division, growth, and specialization comes from transcription (via RNA) and duplication of our DNA. If a cell or the DNA of a healthy cell is damaged, a process known as apoptosis (cell-suicide) will take place. This process engages our white blood cells to deactivate the potential hazard and discard the remnants safely. This is a key process that keeps us healthy and growing. If apoptosis fails to occur, the dead cells will accumulate—a condition known as necrosis, which is a root cause of arthritis (an autoimmune disease). Another effect is DNA mutation, which is the key pathway to cancer. At the time of this writing, to the author’s knowledge – no mutation has resulted in a benefit to the body, in the short term. Evolution is a process of mutations, which is beneficial, but over a much longer term compared to the human life span.
Vitamins and minerals are key nutrients that our body requires to achieve homeostasis: the proper conditions for our body to function normally. When conditions change, our body must react to the effects with maximum efficiency and quickly return the body to the state of homeostasis. If our body is moved away from homeostasis for a prolonged duration, it could have negative downstream effects. A properly nourished body will have all the tools and talents available needed to deal with the processes and demands of daily activity. As nutrients are used they are generally changed to another form or metabolized and excreted by the body as metabolites. Our body can synthesize some nutrients from the food we eat. These include amino acids, proteins, neurotransmitters, hormones, steroids and other organic compounds, which are made mostly by shuffling
around atoms of other organic compounds. What our body is not capable of is acquiring any element (potassium, calcium, iron, manganese, iodine, etc. even carbon) without intake or eating food. Therefore making sure the food we eat contains a variety of minerals and essential compounds is paramount.
Stems cells are beyond the scope this book but are another feature of the body that is translating to be of sizable importance to our knowledge of bodily function and development. The take home lesson from this topic is that the body works
