    Introduction

    Kep (Saddle of the Horse, in Khmer translation) is the remains of a colonial French seaside resort and capital of Kep Province. The town is 26 km from Kampot, 163km from Phnom Penh, and 37km from Ha Tien (border to Vietnam). Kep province is the smallest province in Cambodia, and one of the newest provinces. Kep province was created by Royal Decree on 22 December 2008, to separate the area from Kampot province. Kep’s main attraction is its relaxed beaches, crab market, Kep National Park (Bopha Prasidh Road), and Rabbit Island.

    Established by the French in 1908, Kep town was Cambodia’s top seaside destination until the 1960s, when Sihanoukville started drawing tourists away with its larger beaches. When the Khmer Rouge took power, many of the locals started stripping the luxury villas to sell the items for money.
