––––––––
Max was running in the back yard when he heard a knock on the door. His owner, Mr. Sam, went to open it and Max ran over to see who it was. There was a young man dressed in the army uniform standing outside.
Hello! My name is Sergeant Ken and I am here on behalf of the United States Army,
said the man on the doorway.
Hello. My name is Sam. And this is my dog, Max. Please come in Sergeant.
The man in uniform walked into the house and sat down. Max did not understand why he had come to the house. He had never seen a man in the Army uniform before.
Sir, I have come to request that you allow us to take Max with us to the Army,
he said. We are looking for strong and courageous dogs to help us protect our country. Max is very strong and he can help us in very many ways. We are hoping that he will be among our heroes,
Max couldn’t believe it. He had always wanted to join the Army. He had seen it on T.V and thought that it was very cool. He had even had a dream that he was in the Army. Walking besides the commander general and leading the troops to war. He did not want to see people fight, but he wanted to help keep people safe. He looked at Sam eagerly waiting for him to say yes.
Ok, Sergeant. I believe that my Max will do some good. I have trained him to be disciplined and he can also run very well. I will be happy if he were to serve our great country,
Sam told the sergeant.
Ok, thank you very much sir. I promise that we will take care of him. I will come to pick him up tomorrow, thank you and have a lovely day
said the sergeant. Sam opened the door for him and he went out.
Well, Max, you are finally going to be in the Army! Just like you wanted right?
Mr. Sam rubbed his head and Max started barking with pleasure.
That night, Max could not sleep. He was so excited and could not wait for morning. He was the first one to get up and went to wake up Mr. Sam. Mr. Sam made him his breakfast but he did not eat much. He just could not wait to go to the Army. At 10 o’clock, Sergeant Ken came to pick him up. Max was happy to go but he was so sad to leave Mr. Sam. He would really miss him. He went and nuzzled at Mr. Sam’s feet and he rubbed his head lovingly.
Take care of yourself Max. Do not forget about me and when you come back, you will tell me all the stories,
Mr. Sam told Max. Then Max and Sergeant Ken went into the police car and
