    CHAPTER 1

    Tuesday before Thanksgiving in Warfield's Landing

    Nic slid the small table away from the cafe window. It was the last window to be painted before Thanksgiving. She'd paint the other holiday themed windows next week.

    Deftly, she taped clean drop cloths along the windowsill and secured them to the floor. Draping another drop cloth over a table, she set up her supplies.

    She had painted quick sketches for each window on illustration board. Mixing the very first color, she dabbed it on the sketch to check that it was a match.

    Nic. Nic. It was Stevie's voice. Pulling herself back from the quiet place where she painted, Nic looked around, startled. She saw Will, Stevie, and Ruth Ann standing by her supplies table and smiling at her.

    Hey! Sorry to interrupt. This looks wonderful. And this is the last one... You made great time. Stevie grinned at her.

    Nic laughed. Actually, I've enjoyed this. It's like going back to high school without the angst. Ruth Ann looked puzzled, so Nic explained. Part of why I chose painting was because I love the feel of painting on a surface. Most of the time I'm doing watercolor or acrylic on canvas, but paint on glass has a totally different feel. In fact, until now, I hadn't even realized I missed it.

    That certainly makes sense. Ruth Ann reached out a finger and touched the sketch. I hadn't realized... Did you put paint on all the sketches you did?

    Will grinned at Nic and winked. Nic smiled back as she answered Ruth Ann's question. Yes, I did. For me as an artist, these sketches are simply tools. I show them to the shop owner, so she'll know what I have planned, but I don't consider them art in and of themselves. They're just a tool.

    Ruth Ann laughed ruefully. As a person without a single artistic bone in her body, what you can do borders on magic for me. I love the windows... Don't get me wrong, but there's something about these sketches that you did... She held up the current sketch and compared it to the window. "Now, seeing the window itself, and the paint swatches on the sketch... It gives the sketch much more power. I can see it as part
